Pennies for Patients Campaign
One in 330 children in Nebraska will develop cancer by age 19. A first grade student at Cather Elementary School developed Burkett's Lymphoma and underwent four months of intensive treatment for this aggressive cancer. The Cather Student Council, guided by Teri Nolting and Bonnie Skaff, decided they could help children with cancer by participating in the Pennies for Patients campaign sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This organization raises money for lifesaving research and local services. This is an important fight as leukemia causes more deaths than any other disease among children under the age of 20.
Cather's goal was to raise $700. Students exceeded the goal and raised $1,000. The goal also was to show students that they can make a difference and help in the fight to find a cure for these life threatening diseases. To reward students, Ms. Peal, Ms. Nolting, and Ms. Skaff colored their hair!
