Asset Category of the Month: Transition Assets

“May is upon us at last!” Or is it, “where has the year gone?!” How ever you are feeling about the month of May one thing is certain: it is time to reflect. Reflect on all of the great memories this past school year has created. Reflect on the growth and learning that all of us have experienced. What can be done differently next year? What are we sure we will do the same? These are the questions that we need to be thinking about over the summer and as we prepare for the next school year.

One of the great things that CMS implemented this year was the Asset Development Incentive Program. Kids that earned 5 or more asset tags were invited to spend a special day on April 4 watching a movie, listening to a band, and touring a black hawk helicopter. What a great day it was! We are hoping that next year will be just as special and that students are timelier about earning their tags.

Another meaningful experience that students at CMS shared was their Service Learning projects. To celebrate these projects and the learning that took place, students hosted a Service Learning Fair at school. Each homeroom was able to display and explain their project and all of the hard work they did.

All of this asset building does not need to end in May. There are many intentional ways that you can continue to help your children work on the 40 assets. Over the summer, make it a point to use the http://mvparents.com/ website and continue this process at home. Also, please read and use the attached Ideas for Parents. They contain information on asset building at home.

What Does CMS Do to Implement the 40 Developmental Assets?

Asset Coordinator- The CMS Asset Coordinator is Cathy Spear. She ensures implementation of lessons and programs that focus on building the external supports and internal strengths or Assets of our students at school, at home, and in the community. The following are descriptions of some of the programs in place.

Asset Tags- Students are awarded Asset Tags for having met individually-based external or internal asset requirements. The Asset Tags not only represent the assets each student has, but also what assets they can strive to achieve. Students who receive all eight tags (one for each asset type) will get to attend Asset Day.

Asset Day is a day set aside to celebrate the students at CMS who have earned all eight asset tags throughout the year. It is held at the end of the year and is a fun-filled day with games, prizes, music, learning opportunities, and more.

Cyclone Bucks -Students are awarded Cyclone Bucks for having earned an Asset Tag or demonstrating assets throughout the school year. Students can earn Cyclone Bucks by positively participating or going above and beyond in school activities, reaching goals, demonstrating notable achievement in the classroom, or showing outstanding progress outside of the classroom. The student’s achievement is always acknowledged and praised at the time the Cyclone Buck is awarded.

School Store- Students have the opportunity to purchase items using their Cyclone Bucks. Items at the School Store include special passes, privilege activities, fun school supplies, tickets for free admission to activities, lunch of their choice, tokens, movie passes, sporting event passes, and even an iPod Shuffle! The school store is open every other Friday of the month.

Monthly Asset Themes- The CMS calendar of events focuses on a different asset category each month. The Asset of the Month is announced at the beginning of each month along with a brief description and example. It is also posted on the Asset Wall outside of the office.

Students and staff focus activities, lessons, and goals on the Asset of the Month. Teachers are also encouraged to include the asset in daily classroom activities.

Good Friends Program- Adults at CMS serve as support resources for students. Good Friends may attend asset-focused, school-based activities throughout the school year. For example, they might attend library night, a movie matinee, school concerts, or sporting events to name a few. The Good Friends Program is an additional way for CMS to help students to grow up in a supportive and caring environment.
