Directories, Search Engines, and Meta-search Engines
Be sure to select the best type of search tool for your purpose.

Directories

Directories are compiled by human beings rather than by computer programs. Directories should be used  when the user prefers to access sites which have been especially selected for inclusion. Since most directories include a "Search" option, they can easily be confused with search engines.

Search Engines

Search Engines are computer programs that search the Internet looking for specific information. They should be used when you have a definite topic in mind. Search engines usually allow the user to do Boolean searches, but each search engine works in a different way.

Meta-search Engines

Meta-search Engines are powerful computer programs that search many other search engines. They should be used to locate information about topics which have proven to be very difficult to find. They are much more thorough than regular search engines and result in many more hits, which is frequently a disadvantage.
