Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — We have had a great beginning to the 08-09 school year! Things are flowing along like we never left last spring. We are particularly impressed with the new kindergartners. There are so many things to learn when one starts school— lining up, waiting for a turn, sharing, carrying a lunch tray, opening milk cartons— and that’s just the beginning! This group is doing a great job of learning all the procedures necessary to make learning happen.
One reason Cottonwood is such a great place to go to school is the teachers. New to us this year is Mrs. Lori Swallow in first grade. Mrs. Swallow came to us from Kansas City, but her home has actually always been Omaha! In fact, Mrs. Swallow was born in Omaha and went to Morton Elementary, Millard North Middle School, and Millard North High School. Little Lori Shanahan started kindergarten with an impressive young teacher— Mrs. Toni Caragiulo! She was destined to become a teacher, even though she started out in nursing at Clarkson College.
After graduating from UNO, she was accepted into the Cadre program at UNO and worked at Sandoz Elementary as a second grade teacher while working on her master’s degree in elementary education. From there she transferred to Morton Elementary and looped in kindergarten and first grades. She spent about two years in Kansas City teaching first grade before coming back to her roots in Millard. Mrs. Swallow lives with her husband, two cats and a dog. She loves to scrapbook and vacation on warm beaches.
Welcome back, Mrs. Swallow! We’re glad you picked Cottonwood.
