Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — Last week our staff took a few minutes one afternoon and gathered in the Media Center to pay tribute to a special volunteer who retired over the summer. Daisy, a Basset Hound Edu-PUP, had come to school faithfully to serve kids in Mrs. Scherbring’s kindergarten class for almost three years. Daisy loved to greet students in the hallways on her mornings here, and she often wore fanciful hats with her therapy vest. She loved to sit in the teacher’s chair with Mrs. Scherbring as she read to the class, and she was always willing to flop over for a belly rub if you stopped to greet her in the halls.
Daisy liked to stay close to Mrs. Scherbring unless there were children around. Hurt feelings and homesickness were her specialties, and sounds of children in distress always brought her running. Daisy graced the front page of the Omaha World Herald along with Hook, Mrs. Torres’ first therapy dog, a couple of years ago.
Last summer Mrs. Scherbring made the decision to retire Daisy, as teaching second grade was a new situation, and Daisy seemed to be feeling a bit more tired than usual. The dog began losing weight, too. About two weeks ago, Daisy came in to visit Cottonwood, and even though her tail never stopped wagging, she clearly didn’t have the strength to volunteer any more.
Shortly after her visit, Daisy passed away. We like to think that she and Hook are a team again, helping others in that very special place where all good dogs go when they leave this earth. Several other working dogs came to school last week to honor Daisy’s life and service. She was a very special spirit, and we are grateful for the time she shared with us all here at Cottonwood.
