Last Friday all of us here at Cottonwood had the chance to answer that question. Our lights went out at 1:25, and they didn’t come back on until 3:10. If you remember, it was raining outside, so we couldn’t take the kids out in the light— and there wasn’t much sun anyway! Our SAFE Team came to the office, and we all grabbed our flashlights and started heading to the darker areas of the building. Mrs. Betz began calling to see if the outage was ours or the area’s. Of course now we know that our surrounding area was also blacked out. As I went through the building checking the classrooms, I was very impressed. Teachers continued teaching where they could, and the others were reading to the kids by flashlight! It was quite cozy. A phenomenal number of kids had to use the bathroom, and they were accommodated with flashlight escorts. A District director came out to the building to make sure we were all right. A couple of classes went to the Media Center, and one moved toward a doorway to use the light that was coming in through the rain. One resourceful second-grade teacher remembered that her new science kits had penlights in them, so she was able to have her kids work in groups. They all did a great job. There were no tears and we were still able to keep learning. When the SAFE Team debriefed after the blackout, we noted the things we did well and what we needed to work on. We decided to check our batteries more often for sure! Overall, we were very pleased with the reactions of our staff and the safety plans we have in place. Where were we when the lights went out?
