Welcome to the Millard Public School�s Guidance and Counseling Department

The mission of the MPS guidance and counseling program is to help provide the services and resources needed for students to become productive members of our diverse society.�� Counselors work with parents, administrators, other school personnel, and the community to nurture and support each individual student with his/her academic concerns, future planning and personal/social needs.

One of the primary roles of the counseling staff is to be proactive and preventative.� This is accomplished by delivering the developmental guidance program to all students.� The curriculum is presented using structured lessons, presentations, and integrated projects that are designed to help students achieve the competencies of the guidance program.�

K-12 Academic Competencies:

Develop intellectual and reasoning skills
Understand the goal setting process and use it effectively
Make appropriate decisions
Plan individual�s academic programs
Develop lifelong learning skills
Develop and use effective communication skills
Learn skills necessary for academic success
Access information through available resources and technology
Understand personal strengths and weaknesses including test information

K-12 Career Competencies:

Understand the work world
Demonstrate essential knowledge of good work habits and methods of self-marketing
Demonstrate ability to pursue short and long-term career goals

Research and plan for successful transition from school to work

K-12 Personal/Social Competencies:

Develop self understanding
Demonstrate appropriate social skills and social understanding

In addition to the counseling curriculum, counselors also facilitate support groups that respond to student needs.� Groups focus on particular topics such as:

All groups are confidential, voluntary, held within the school day, and led by counselors and/or certified staff members.

Many student issues/needs are best addressed in individual sessions.� At all grade levels counselors are available to respond to these needs.� Parents, students, administrators, and/or other school personnel can initiate these services.�
