Safety and Security
The goal of Millard Public Schools is to protect and keep every
student and staff member safe. The Safety and Security Committee has members
from the community, parents, students, counselors, psychologists, teachers,
and principals who meet on a monthly basis.
District Safety Committee Responsibilities
- Review the district safety plan.
- Must be conducted annually
- Follow Rule 10 Criteria
- Make recommendations for changes
- Review building safety plans and establish template for building plans which
requires that they all follow the same format in their plan.
- Establish criteria in safety procedures for outside security reviews. A
checklist has been developed which the Omaha Police Department will use as
a guide for the audits.
- Other areas of school safety that are identified as a need. Results of
the safety audits will be reviewed.
- Recommendations for future safety planning.

Security Measures Implemented
- Schools are limiting outside access to their buildings.
- All staff have been issued pictured name identification tags.
- Visitors or staff members not assigned to the building are required to sign
in and out.
- Hall monitors now wear uniforms, are called security staff and are receiving
training on nonviolent intervention.
- School Resource Officers (SROs) have been added to all three high schools
and two middle schools.
- The Emergency Management Procedures have been distributed to all personnel
who are in a position to supervise children during an emergency.
- All of the schools have developed building safety plans specific to their
building.
- Buildings have been assessed for security cameras and pilot installations
have begun.
- Schools have installed keyless entry systems where PE classes and outside
classes can gain access to the buildings and still keep the doors locked when
they don’t need to have entry.
- The District has imposed no-tolerance disciplinary procedures against student
violence and threats of violence.
- Student disciplinary records will be transferred between levels so that
potentially violent students can be counseled.
- Students who have exhibited tendencies toward violence will be identified
and counselors will work with them in order to prevent future violent acts.
- A District student at-risk database is being developed so behavior plans
and counseling can be provided for violent students.
- Teachers and/or staff have been assigned to supervision of hallways and
other uncontrolled areas between classes and before and after school.
- A uniform code has been developed to alert staff and students when a dangerous
situation exists within or outside the school.
- More 2-way radios, pagers and cell phones are being provided for immediate
access to proper authorities for activities in the school building, on school
grounds, and when out of district.
- In cooperation with area schools and the police department, new measures
were developed for bomb threats.
- Drug dogs are being used to help keep our schools free of drugs.
- Meetings are being held between the schools and police officials to increase
communication and cooperation.
- A District SAFE team has been formed to respond to and assist buildings
during catastrophic emergencies.
- A safety policy (5900) and accompanying safety rules (5900.1 and 5900.2)
have been approved by the Board.
- The safety procedures were reviewed by the District Safety Committee.
The procedures were brought into compliance with the safety policy.
- Safety Audits by the Omaha Police Department are being conducted in compliance
with Rule 10 requirements. Every school in the District is being audited
to check their compliance with district safety procedures.
- Video cameras have been added to all of the schools.
- A staff development program trains staff members on bullying and harassment,
dealing with difficult situations, and other safety issues.
- A Violence Prevention Committee developed criteria by which each building
will develop their violence prevention program.
- The Standards for Student Conduct are now policy.
- Each building principal and the District SAFE Team Members have been provided
with a multi-channel portable radio.
