Summary by: Tanner B.
The Phantom of the Opera, written by Gaston Leroux in 1911 has a reading level of 10.0 and is worth 17 points. This book is a classic and often understated when it is really an excellent story. I would give it five stars. The story begins when the two new managers of the Paris Opera, Richard annd Moncharmin are having some trouble with the "Opera Ghost". He demands a large salary, and in addition, for the managers to stop casting La Carlotta, the lead soprano, and cast young, beautiful Christine Daae, who he secretly voice teaches. Well, Erik the "Opera Ghost" ends up not-so-secretly liking Christine, who is already like by Raoul de Chagny. When his orders are not obeyed, such as leaving Box 5 empty, not casting Carlotta, paying his salary, and forcing Chirstine to marry him, horrible things happen. Chandaliers fall, lead sopranos begin to sing like toads, francs are stolen, innocent people are murdered and tortured. As for his final request... the choices are either Christine, or the opera house and everyones' lives. This is a great, classic read! Shannon R.
