TWO NEBRASKA SCHOOLS RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS BLUE RIBBON AWARD

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel today congratulated two Nebraska schools for earning the Blue Ribbon award for excellence in education from the U.S. Department of Education. Millard West High School and Peter Kiewit Middle School in Omaha are two of only 172 schools nationwide to receive the award.

“Millard West High School and Peter Kiewit Middle School have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to outstanding education and quality teaching,” Nelson said. “I am proud that these two Nebraska schools have gained national recognition for their exceptional effort.”

“The education of our young people is the foundation of our future,” Hagel said. “Peter Kiewit Middle School and Millard West High School are strong institutions that are exceeding today's education standards. The educators and administrators at these schools play an extremely important role for our children and deserve this selection as National Blue Ribbon Schools.”

"We're proud to be among the Blue Ribbon Schools not only in the Millard District but in the state and nation," said Rick Kolowski, principal of MillardWest High School. "This is the culmination of a lot of hard work for the last seven years from a relatively new school."

"This Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a tribute to our staff and students as well as the fine community support of education we enjoy at Kiewit Middle School, "said Phil Koch, principal of Peter Kiewit Middle School.

The selection of Millard West High School and Peter Kiewit Middle School marks the fourth year in a row that schools in the Millard School District have won the prestigious honor. To date, 13 of Millard's 31 schools have earned Blue Ribbon Awards.

Blue Ribbon Awards are given by the U.S. Department of Education to schools that demonstrate excellence in teaching, curriculum, policies and practices. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced the awards on May 24.

The schools will be formally honored in a national ceremony in Washington, DC this fall.
