MMP's Mission Statement:
Mustang Mentoring Program or MMP has two primary purposes. 1. Help freshmen better transition into high school and 2. Teach upperclassmen leadership skills through their leadership of small groups of freshmen.
Instead of a traditional homeroom time, the entire freshmen class is broken down into groups of 5 or 6 and paired up with an upperclassman mentor. They meet once a week during the school day (Mustang Time) to lead discussions about what successful students do and to be a "mentor" for them. Some groups are also starting to meet outside of class time to have some fun together.
Throughout the year there are also events geared only to mentors to continue their learning of leadership principles and putting their skills into practice. These activities serve as bonding experiences for the mentors, as well as an opportunity to “sharpen their saw”.
Mentors are selected after going through an intensive application and interview process and attend a summer training session. Mentors then meet once a week throughout the school year. At these meetings mentors collaborate and work together to plan activities for Mustang Time as well as outside of the classroom.
MMP is student run. The mentors have chosen a board which meets weekly to set agendas for the overall direction of the program.
This year is the first year for the MMP and we are off to a phenomenal start!!
