Foreign Exchange Students

International Educational Travel & Exchange Programs that are approved by Millard Schools are to adhere to the following guidelines.

1. Generally, no more than two students from a particular program will be accepted in a given year.

2. Individual student applications are to be presented to the office of Pupil Services, Millard Public Schools, 5606 South 147th Street, Omaha, NE 68137. Telephone - (402) 715-8300

3. The names and addresses of the host family and local exchange program representative, as well as an indication of the school the student would like to attend, are to accompany the student application.

4. Before any decision is made regarding an individual student application, the following information must be available:

a. An indication of the student's English language proficiency, preferably from his/her current school. In addition, a short written essay that would provide some idea of the student's ability to write in English would be helpful.

b. Information about the student's aspirations. What are the student's graduation needs and occupational expectations, etc?

c. General information about the student and U.S. host family (interests, personal expectations, etc.).

d. Documentation of financial support and assurance that the student is covered by health insurance.

e. A complete transcript and brief explanation of the transcript.

5. The Director of Pupil Services will inform the foreign exchange program representative of the school's decision to accept or not accept each student applicant.

6. Millard Schools do not provide English-as-a-second-language instruction to foreign exchange students. Foreign exchange students should not expect to receive a diploma from the Millard Schools unless they fulfill all of the regular high school graduation requirements.

7. The classes a foreign exchange student takes will be determined by the school registrar after an evaluation of the student's transcript, interviews with the student, and, in some instances, the student's performance on achievement tests.

8. The local foreign exchange program representative is to arrange and attend a meeting with the exchange student, the host family, and the high school principal involved prior to the exchange student starting school.

9. The local foreign exchange program representative is expected to confer with the involved high school principal (or designee) throughout the year on a schedule to be determined by the principal.
