For the fourth year Reeder students are fortunate to have their very own therapy dog! Moses, a 3-year-old Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever and Standard Poodle mix), will be taking over the official duties of Woody who had been here previously. Woody has taken an early retirement from Domesti-Pups to work in the Baldwin Toys shop as “head of security.” Unfortunately this job was available due to the passing of a Baldwin family pet, Dusty.
Moses began his career at Reeder when it opened in 2005. He originally was in training to be a service dog for the disabled but this proved not to be his calling. Moses had been visiting Reeder as our unofficial mascot but on August 1, 2008, he and Mrs. Pam Baldwin graduated from the Domesti-Pups eight month training program as a certified therapy team! Moses now proudly wears the coveted yellow therapy dog vest worn only by Edu-Pups, those therapy dogs that work mainly in an educational setting. Therapy dog training consisted of attending 10 training classes, passing the American Kennel Club’s “Canine Good Citizen” test and completing six supervised community visits. Then it was necessary to be recommended for graduation. Moses is owned by Mrs. Baldwin. Mrs. Baldwin is a Paraprofessional in one of Reeder’s Early Childhood classrooms and Moses will be accompanying her there. He especially loves the little ones! We hope to eventually have Moses involved with other classroom activities throughout the building as well. There are currently 12 Edu-Pups teams in the Omaha area, 5 of them in Millard. If you have any concerns, questions, or suggestions, please contact Mrs. Baldwin and she will be happy to talk with you! More information about Domesti-Pups can be found out www.domesti-pups.org.
