Independent Study 2008:

You may find this page to be helpful and interesting while you do your Independent Study on Genetics.

Friday, April 4

Read the section called The Basics from the Gee! in Genome - Make sure you have read all sections.

Read this page about the Human Genome Project.

Print this diagram of a DNA chain showing the A,C, T and G base proteins, or find a better one, if you can.

Wednesday, April 16

Research Bioengineered Food.  You might use "geneticly engineered"  or "genetically modified"  or "genetically altered" as your Search keyword.

You should collect information about the "good" things of genetically modified foods and the "bad" things about genetically modified.

You may work with one partner, but you won't know on which side of the debate you will be on until Friday.

Thursday, April 17

Continue to research and compile notes "for" and "against" bioengineering foods/animals for better performance, production, etc.

Find, print and highlight Internet articles on each of these topics:

1.  Bioethics - What is it?  What does it mean?  Why do we need to consider ethics in genetics?

2.  Cloning of animals/plants

3.  The "Seed Bank" in Antarctica

4.  The extinction of a rare breed of dolphin in China - Would this be a case of where cloning might be good?

Friday, April 18

Did you know the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) located in Nebraska works to develop new technology in order to increase the efficiency of livestock production and benefit consumers?

Check it out!! :
