Pitch’s presentation to area schools focused on the topic of his award-winning book. He discussed the burning of the White House and Capitol by the British in 1814, the bombardment of Fort McHenry, and the birth of the national anthem three weeks later.
Smithsonian scholar Anthony Pitch is an author, historian and public speaker. He has written numerous books including “The Burning of Washington: The British Invasion of 1814,” a recipient of the Maryland Historical Society’s annual book award. Pitch has been featured on National Public Radio, Voice of America, BBC, and TV New Zealand. He has been a guest lecturer at Fort McHenry, Library of Congress, the U.S. Capitol, and the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

Anthony Pitch spoke to all 8th grade American History classes. Students showed high interest in his presentation.
Mr. Pitch highly complimented RMS students' good behavior.

| Mitten Tree |

Russell Middle School students donated 400 clothing items for the Mitten Tree, a project of the Camp Fire Council.
The Youth-to-Youth Club and the Student Council organized the drive. Sponsors are Jean Devoy and Nancy Nielson.
This is an annual event at Russell.

| Scholastic Book Fair came to Russell in November |
| During the Scholastic Bookfair (November 12-16), RMS raised $1000 to spend on books for the media center. Next year the bookfair will take place during the October conferences. We hope to double our book rewards! |

| Media Center has New Look |
| Mrs. Dietsch, new Media Specialist, has given the Media Center a new look. Various displays, new tables, chess, and bright posters make the Media Center a very inviting place for students to come read, study, do research and just relax. |
