Aha! It’s a beautiful morning and time to get on going to school. First it’s math time! We have a big math test tomorrow that we’re studying for. Yes! We get to play a math review game that was fun: Around the World! It’s not actually going around the whole world, but you go around your class doing multiplication problems.
Next we’re off to music to have some fun with instruments. We went into our groups and made an Indian raga.
Back in the classroom we decided to do WordMaster words. Do you know what subjective means? Well, that’s one of our WordMaster words. What you do is you’re assigned some words that us kids would probably not know what they mean. We have to find the definition of the words and study them so when we’re tested on them, we know what they mean.
Finally, our time to just relax and read! Today we are taking a quiz on the computer for nice old social studies. What a mess in our safe folders! We have so much junk, so we decided to clean them out . That’s much better. Yeah, it was teacher read at last! The book our class is reading is The Kid Who Ran for President. Also during teacher read we get to do any unfinished work. After that we had book projects to present. They are called team cards and they’re kind of like trading cards.
What’s really fun is we get to make Quizzlers quizzes on our Palm handhelds about a book we read. It was kind of hard. "WOW!" Time sure does go by fast; school is already over. I hope tomorrow is as good as today.
Ah, Enrichment Day. As everybody scurried into the room, and everybody was excited because it was Enrichment Day. So you're probably wondering what Enrichment Day is. Well it's not your typical ordinary school day. Enrichment Day is a day where you go to different classrooms to do different activities. One of the only bad things about Enrichment Day is that you have to haul all kinds of supplies around with you. Today I got lucky because all of the classrooms that I had to go to were in the fifth grade hallway. That's the grade I'm in.
To start out Enrichment Day, my group and I went to the empty fifth grade classroom to make African masks. When we first got there we talked about why people use masks. You're probably wondering what we made them out of? We made them out of paper plates. First you had to sketch out what you were going to do. I made eyes, a triangle nose, a rhombus mouth, and finally I put rhombi above the eyes. Oh yeah, and I poked a hole in the plate, then I stuck a flower through the hole, and then finally I glued it in. That was my favorite part of my mask. Unfortunately, I got done 20 minutes early. So I had to sit around doing nothing except watch everybody else finish their masks. But I got lucky and time flew by really fast.
On to the next room! Next we went to Ms. French's room where Mrs. Hough was waiting to teach us how to make "The God's Eye." "The God's Eye" is something the Mexicans and the Bolivians believed in. You had to choose two sticks that were the same length, then you had to pick a color of string to make "The God." To do that you had to tie your sticks together with that string and then start wrapping it. Just to get it right I had to say to myself "wrap and rotate." It got kind of annoying. And yet again I got done 20 minutes early! In that 20 minutes I looked at the computers screen saver. I did this because it had pictures of things like people in the Army and students in fifth grade.
Ok. So far my favorite "session" was the stick wrapping one. After that we were scheduled to go down to the gym. We had no idea what we were going to do there. When we got there Mrs. Lindamen and Mrs. Z talked to us about what we were going to do. We had to make hats that represented the year we were born in. For example, I was born in 1994. So I would make a dog to put on my hat. If you were born in 1993 you would make a rooster. First you would have to get your head measured by Mrs. Lindamen or Mrs. Z. Then you would pick two pieces of construction paper for each side of your hat so it would look like your head was a dog's or a rooster's. Pretty cool, huh? After that you had to cut out ears, eyes, a nose, and a mouth if you were a dog. If you were a rooster you would have to make a gobble, a comb (the hair on top of the rooster's head,) eyes, and a beak. I made my dog out of pink and black paper. And I know you're wondering why I used pink. Well it's because pink is my favorite color is pink and it looks cool with black. It turned out pretty good.
Enrichment day was almost over but we had to go back to our classroom for about an hour. First thing we did when we got back is, we started S.Q.U.I.R.T. That stands for. Silent, Quiet, Uninterrupted, Reading, Time. You know I just don't get it why we just can't call it BEAR or something like that. Oh yeah and we got to munch on our yummy snack. I had pretzels. And then it was time for our Wordmaster quiz. Wordmasters is these words that are words that a lot of kids don't know what they mean. It was actually pretty easy if you studied. Some of the words were sect, clique, and embrace. After that it was time for lunch. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My dessert was a chocolate chip cookie. Yum! It was good. Then we went out for recess. At reccess I played football like always. Because of the weird schedule we had lunch with the fourth graders. That meant we got to have or little fourth graders versus fifth graders football game! I scored two touchdowns. And we also beat the fourth graders.
Then we came back inside to get ready for the ending of Enrichment Day were everybody goes into the gym for the ending. We, the fifth graders, had to tie tissue paper streamers to our arms and go in flapping our arms. I don't know why we had to do that. Then everybody sat down and Mrs. Kelly started talking and told us that Mrs. Wallace had about 20 students that their first language they learned wasn't English. So they said something in the language that they first learned. It was pretty cool to hear all kinds of different languages. Then we watched a little video that Mr. Vincent put together about our Enrichment Day on a big projection screen.
And by the time the video was over it was time to leave. So all in all, today was a pretty busy day. Don't you think?
Ready to go to school? What are you waiting for? LETS GO! Time for math. Today during our time in the ravishing library, we did Larson Math. A ton of people finished a section. "Well kids it is time to go back to the classroom." Darn. Then we walked to the to the classroom. Then we had to check our Review Sheets. Then we heard the words the made us go insane! It was time for gym.
During gym we played the incredible game of basketball. We all loved it! After that we had to go with the sweat coming out of us to the classroom for spelling.
In spelling we did our WordMasters quiz for words 1-7 and we all did great! Following that we checked our words of 8-14 for our next quiz. We hope we are going to do great.
Then we had our super uninterrupted reading time... SQUIRT. We all read very far.
Coming up is editing. We had to do one page. That was pretty boring. But we also had a essay on showing how we care.
Having fun... Well, time for lunch. Some kids in our class got to have pizza. After lunch we had lunch we had recess. It was AWESOME!
Then we had teacher read. We finished a lot of work. We all loved the book we choose. The Kid Who Ran for President is the book we choose. It is so funny. Even our teacher was laughing at it.
Then it was time for Social Studies. We presented our project that we have been working on for a long time. Everybody loved the projects. Then we read about everybody's state.
Class, it is time for school to get out. So bye.
Bam! I got my homework done at the last second. Then a lot of students walked in as slow as a sloth. After a long weekend that doesn’t seem very surprising. On our desk was a TFK about jaguars. One thing it said was the people were making a fee for how much forest land they owned.
Next up is Math. in that we got a surprise in we had a test on Friday. The teacher had the review sheet passed out. Fractions are what the test is all about--and a lot of fractions. After that we had Math Boxes on page 210.
Then off to Music class with Ms. Noble. The energy controller turned off the lights and we were on our way. In Music we were sort of in a band and we did that for the whole time.
Right before Squirt we checked or analogy quiz. Then we went into our silent reading time.
After a tiring Squirt, we went to reading. The homework was 20 questions. Good thing it was due by Wednesday.
Some kids had band class after lunch. Everyone started working on the billboard. We thought it was due today but there was an extension.
The end of the day was rough. Everyone trampled through the door.
When I arrived at school all I heard going through a person’s ears and out their mouth was, “It's Friday!” When the bell rang it was time to enjoy our last day at school until the weekend. When I walked into the school as well as the others there was our awesome teacher Miss Everts greeting us into the classroom. On the blackboard it read Check in, and do the TFK (Time for Kids) worksheet on your desk. We all did as we were told.
While we were enjoying our chilly morning in our warm classroom, Miss Everts said to put away your things. Right away we did that. We got out our math books and started our lesson. We were learning how to add and subtract our fractions. We did pretty good on those! That took up about an hour then we got our assignment! The assignment was four pages in Math. It was sort of hard!
The next subject ahead was Word Master Words and analogy packets. We checked the analogy packets and didn't do so well on them (well at least I did). The pages were hard. Next we got our assignment, it was to do the two last pages in our analogy packet! It was easy. We worked on analogies for about twenty minutes. Next it was time for Word Master Words. We had to do the last seven words 19-25. I finished them in a hurry but did well.
Finally a break, it was gym class. We played volleyball with beach balls. It was fun because we tied with the other class with their bumps back and forth! We tied them with 26 points. Gym class went by quick because we were having so much fun. It was time to leave unfortunately.
In addition, it was time to jump into a great book! We also enjoyed our yummy snacks. I had pretzels other people had like chips and gold fish. SQUIRT lasted about half an hour. Next we all had to close our books and learn the next lesson.
Next, We had a little time to work while we decided what we were going to do for our book groups! We decided that we were going to finish the rest of the book. Some book groups had 20 questions to answer. Luckily I don't have that yet.
Our stomachs were growling and we were getting really hungry! It was time to enjoy a pleasant lunch with our friends and time to talk! On the lunch menu was a Shaker Salad and a Chicken Patty sandwich! I had cold lunch and so did a lot of my friends.
Then, it was time to get the energy out of us and run like electricity out of the lunch room to recess. We have 15 minutes to do what we want at recess. I usually talk to my friends. Some people do other things!
Next, we had Social Studies. We are learning about the 13 colonies. It is kind of boring, but today was fun. We got to do a project kind of commercial or at least practice for it. We had Tanner and Trent do the drawings on our paper and Casey and Alexandra were the writers/thinkers. I was the anchor that speaks and shows the poster! We had an hour to work on this! The day was about over!
Finally, it was time to do our assignment notebooks. We had all the stuff that we had to do over the weekend! Oh boy did we have a lot of homework? After that we went and got our backpacks! Miss Everts said to pick up 10 pieces of scraps on the floor! We did that quickly. Then the bell struck 3:30! It was time to leave! Everybody was excited for the weekend, and telling what plans we want to do for the weekend! We had a fun day at school but we were ready for the weekend ahead of us!
Today started out like any other day, but today was a big deal for good spellers. Today Mrs. Kelly, our principal, was to come into our classroom and orally give us a spelling bee. You could only miss five or less to get into the district spelling bee. Keep your hopes up, maybe someone will make it. When math started we had to get our books out. Everyone stampeded over to our boxes. I couldn't tell if I was in a class of elephants or human beings. After that we took a multiplication or a "times" test to see how good we know our math facts. Students who have beaten their best five or more times get to have a party. Do you know how to find equivalent fractions? What you do is you multiply the numerator times any number then you multiply the denominator by the same number. Next, we went to music. We made rags pronounced “rogs” that is the Indian name for songs. The reason we wrote these rags is because our musician of the month wrote his music with an Indian musician. After music we revised our analogy packets. Do you know what a baby whale is called? A. Kid B. Gander C. Calf or D. baby whale? If you chose C, then you were correct. Next we were going to watch our iMovie on DVD. Unfortunately, it wasn't working properly so everyone had to go into S.Q.U.I.R.T. which stands for Silent, Quiet, uninterrupted, Reading, Time. People were scarfing their food like they hadn't eaten in days. Next we went to lunch. For lunch today was A. Cheesy macaroni or B. Deli ham and cheese sub. When we came in everyone had rosy, red cheeks. Next we went into unit studies. The movie we were originally going to watch was too far ahead then we were in the unit so we got to work in groups we had to make an advertisement of our state that we read about. Last but not least we had to work in our reading groups. In conclusion it was a really fun and exciting day. We learned, we laughed and although we had a big day had a big day ahead of us we all worked together to conquer the pressure.
Brrrr! As the safety patrol geared up for the road ahead, the kids were cold. There was chattering teeth and rough. As the bell rang the kids scampered into the school but the safety patrol stayed out and crossed the kids not yet in the school. When the second bell rang the safety potrol sprinted to the door. They probably felt like ice! When everyone was all cozy in the classrooms doing their work, they' re was also those chatty ones. There were more than normal because it was short day and everyone was excited to get out of school at two o'clock. The only thing about this morning that was different was that we had TFK. If you are wondering what TFK is, well it’s Time For Kids news magazine. The “hot" topic (or very important topic) was the recent tsunami. If you don't read the Time For Kids, I'll feel sorry for you the next day because the next day we have a test on it. The next subject was WordMasters, which was kind of strange because we usually do reading then. But in WordMasters we checked the analogies then we did more analogies. Here is one of the analogies: eye is to see as ear is to hear. Then we had to go to gymsic. Gymsic is gym and music smashed together and that makes dancing. We danced to Spanish music it was kind of fun. Yes! My favorite subject was next: writing. We wrote wrote drafts about our dreams, and it was very funky. Then Ms. Evert told us firmly to get out our books for B.E.A.R. I hope you know what that is, but I will tell you any ways: it’s Be Excited About Reading. As we all finish BEAR we transitioned into math. We worked on maps, map keys, time zones, and growing seasons. We did a very easy work sheet on them all. But if that wasn't enough, we had to also do a Math Boxes page. Then for lunch we had COLD pizza. It was as cold as the safety patrol this morning. Then we all went out for recess in the cold, freezing air. As everyone filed back into their own classrooms, it was study hall time until two o'clock. At two everyone left the classroom with as much stamina and vim as they had at the start of the day.
The morning started like any other one in winter: a cold one. As we trampled in, on our desk lay a morning sheet. It was about a story where a kid feels bad for poor people (by the way it was easy). Next came math in which we checked page 198. Some students say it was hard to rename fractions. After that we did Larsons Intermediate Math on the computer. At gym it was volleyball (which we've been playing for the last two weeks). Then came squirt, our reading time, in which I was working on the Willowcam iMovie, so I didn't get to read. After that we had reading in which the three Castle in the Attic groups met. There are three stories: The Hobbit (I'm in that group), A Wrinkle in Time, and like I said before The Castle in the Attic. At lunch we ate hotdogs, my favorite lunch at school, and then went to recess and had a blast. We came in with cold faces only to do writing. In writing we had to write our dream, I wrote I want to be a millionaire. Then we learned about the 13 original colonies and got assigned states we had to write on a little bit. At the end of the day we had study hall and finished whatever we hadn't finished during the day. Lastly we packed up said good bye and stomped out of the building.
As we waited outside for first bell to ring, I could see runny noses and cold faces. Everyone was excited for our three-day weekend! I sat down at my desk and was reading the board that said, "Do the sheet on your desk". What we had to do on the morning sheet was read a story about a kid that was sorry, then answer the questions on the back. At nine o' clock Miss Everts said, "Could everyone clear off your desks. We are going to start math.” Today in math we did pages 198,199, and Math Boxes on page 200. In sixth grade math they did pages 219-221 and Study Link page 94. "Time for gym, could everyone lineup," said Miss Everts. In gym we played volleyball with little beach balls. Paige's team won twice! Good job! We got back to the classroom and we did reading. Some of our groups met and talked about their books. Yes! Time for lunch. Today we had to pick from grilled cheese or chicken patty. I had a cookie, an apple, and, of course, grilled cheese. Mmmm. As our class sat down at their desks we did our assignment notebooks and got ready for the News Bowl. Austin's team only chose sports--nothing else. My team chose lots of different categories. Even numbers went to get their backpacks and mail. Then the odds. We had to pick up seven things and turn in our journals. We all lined up and gave Miss Everts a hug or a high-five. That’s what happened on Friday.
It was a cold day today! I was on safety patrol, but it was too cold to go outside to do safety patrol. So, we made sure none of the students got past the doorways. In the classroom the board said to do the spelling worksheet. It was simple for the most part. In math we did pages 189 and 192. We also reviewed prime factorization and stem and leave charts. In Music we each were assigned an instrument and practiced a rhythm for a song. Ms. Noble said that if we practice hard, we can try a new instrument! After that we went back to the classroom. We had s.q.u.i.r.t. I was reading a book called Mattimeo. It is about a mouse that is taken from his home (Redwall Abbey) and his father Matthias goes to find him. It's a good book so far. We went to the computer lab to review social studies. It was fun, I got a 100%.
We slid into school when the school bell rang in the morning. An announcement said the names of the people who read the most last month in each class. In my class, Corinne read the most last month. Her reward was a book. In math today, we used Skittles as sample sizes. We tried to figure out how many red, green, orange, yellow, and purple Skittles were there. Yellow Skittles were the most common. But we thought red Skittles were the most common at first. Before math we practiced and taped our stories in Willowcam. My group's story was on the snow. I am the page turner in my group. After Willowcam, we got into reading. The Hobbit and the Wrinkle in Time groups met in reading. The others worked on their reading assignments. I am in The Hobbit group. Today the fifth grade had a potluck. I was one of those who didn't participate in the potluck. But the others had a feast! At the end of the day we did study hall. We all tried to finish some of our homework before we went home. And before we knew it ,the school bell rang! I can't wait to go tomorrow! And that wraps up my blog post!
Today was going to be an interesting day for all students, either in Miss Everts’ class, or any other grade. We started out with math. We went to the computer lab for Larson's Math and to follow that we did a math game. The math game was called "The First to 21." The first person with the value of 21 wins! Afterwards, we were called down to take..... pictures! Some students were dressed up and ready to go, others nervously lined up. But it did go smoothly for everyone. Gym was up next! During gym, we practiced volleyball skills. First with balloons, than with beach balls. With the balloons, we had partners. And with beach balls we worked in groups of 4. We got back from gym with tired faces, but continued with work. We did literature circles. We read a certain book and then meet in groups to talk about the book. One of the books is Castle in the Attic.
After that and lunch, we worked on New Year poems. Some were about resolutions, while others were just about the New Year itself. We then started working on our Willowcam news report, everyone had a job to do. Finally, we ended the day with talking about some of the first colonies, such as Jamestown. We got a goodbye choice from Miss Everts, a hug or a high-five, and headed out the door.
This morning, everyone ambled in because, of course, it was a Monday. Today we had a worksheet to do with questions about a story that we read. In math, we did pages 181 and 184, which were both on stem and leaf charts. We also did page 182 on detectives. The last thing that we did was a blue worksheet where one of the questions was, "How many sunflower seeds did Randy measure?" As long as we worked hard and completed the pages, we did not have Math homework. Hooray! Next was Music. Today in music, we worked on learning how to start writing a song with the notes, so we learned what the beats were for the different notes. That way, we would know what our music would sound like. We also started studying about a new composer of the month. Today in reading, our reading groups met for the first time since we started our new books. The books that people are reading are The Hobbit, A Wrinkle in Time, and Castle in the Attic. Our groups also made calendars of reading goals to reach by certain days. Since our class is doing Willowcam this week, we all found out what jobs we were going to have. Miss Everts decided to split us into groups consisting of a reporter, a producer, prop people, and camera people. We also brainstormed as a class for ideas of stories to write. The last thing we did was social studies! Right now in social studies we are studying colonies. Some colonies are Roanoke, Plymouth, and Jamestown. Also as a class we read a packet about Jamestown. We learned from the packet that Jamestown was named after King James. Then last we did a fun work sheet on Jamestown. Finally study hall was here, the last part of the day. Today everyone worked on the homework that had been slowly piling up on the bottom of their chair over the course of the day. As the bell rung, everyone was glad that they had finally made it through that Monday.
Today was a very exciting day because everyone just got back from winter break and two snow days! As our class trudged into the classroom, there was a sheet on our desk that would have a negative remark and we had to come up with something positive about it. After we finished the negative and positive worksheet, it was about 9:00, which meant it was time for math. We had to do a few pages on stem and leaf graphs and toppings on a pizza. We also did two pages of Math Boxes. After math, we had gym. We had to run 11 laps! Ugh! After that, we played a game where we had four teams (yellow, red, blue, and green) and you had to steal your team's rings from everyone else. The yellow team won the first game. When we came back from gym we had SQUIRT. SQUIRT is basically silent reading time. Next, we started book groups. There were three different books. All we had to do was read chapters 1 and 2, except if you were in The Hobbit, which only had to read chapter 1. After that, we made poems about the New Year and winter. I thought that was fun. After most of us were finished with our poems, we had normal lunch and recess. I did not think it was that cold outside compared to the two snow days we had. When we came back inside, we voted for the next teacher read book. Teacher read is when Miss Everts reads aloud to our class and we have work time. When we were finished voting, Miss Everts explained that we will be doing Willowcam next week. Willowcam is like a news report for our school. We picked our 2 favorite jobs (like camera person or reporter) and turned them into Miss Everts. After that, we learned about the early settlers and one early settlement in specific, which was Roanoke. Did you know the people who were living in Roanoke disappeared and no one knows for sure what happened to them? We also did a sheet on the people of Roanoke. Finally, it was time to do assignment notebooks. Then, everyone shuffled through the snow to spend a weekend with their families.
