"The last Tuesday of the year", is what came to mind when I walked into the room today. In fact, it was also our last Tuesday at Willowdale Elementary! Sad, but true. But, if you want to find out what we did during this very special day, you'll have to read on!
The first thing that happened on this very special day was that I noticed that we had a morning sheet on science sitting on our desk. I started to think that I'd never get it done, but once I looked at it, I knew I'd finish by the end of the day. The problems on it were all sort of related. What we had to do was fill in the blanks with letters to make a word. One was, _ _ _ _ _ S_ _ _ _ _. The answer I got was, Solar System. I hope that's right.
Next we had a very special event that happens only once a year. Do you know what it is? You probably do, but for the people who don't go to Willowdale, I'll tell you. It was the TALENT SHOW!!! Yaaayyy! Again, for the people who weren't there, Mrs. Kelley opened the talent show. After that short announcement, it began! There were many acts, but my personal favorites were the tumbling acts. There were also many piano acts. About five to be exact. In the end, everyone did great. Also, every once in a while, they would give out awards to some people. Some were awards for participating in chorus, safety patrol, and other things like that.
When we got back from the talent show, I was thinking about all the overwhelming talent I just saw. But before I could finish my thoughts, Miss Everts interrupted. She said we were going to take our science test everyone had been studying for, for the last week. We were given instructions to give Miss Everts the test when we were done. One example of a problem was, "What is a sundial?" The answer was "An instrument that relies on the movement of the sun's shadow to work." By the way, a sundial tells time by using the sun.
Just as our heads were going to explode with TONS of facts, we were able to take a break, and just read. For S.Q.U.I.R.T. I'm reading The People Of Sparks. It's the sequel to The City Of Ember. So far it's GREAT! While we were reading our wonderful books, Miss Everts called us up to golf. I only made one of the two shots I got, but I still got a piece of candy!
The next thing on the list for this very special day was, of course the most treasured of all subjects, study hall. Some days we don't even get one, but today, we got 25 whole minutes of it! At the end we looked at our science tests we took earlier today. Miss Everts said it was one of the better tests we've taken so far. That was considering that we have had some bad tests.
Usually people don't mention lunch too much, but today lunch was special. We had a PIZZA PARTY!!!!! We had the choices of cheese, pepperoni, and sausage. I had pepperoni, because it's my favorite. We also had pop, cookies, and chips to eat with the pizza. Next was recess. We stayed out for about 45 minutes because we had gotten all 50-class points. We get them when we are good, and behave.
After our sweating bodies got back in from recess, we had writing. We actually had two things we did, but they were both fun. One was to write a paragraph on your favorite school memory. The other one was to write at least a paragraph on where you'll be in thirty years. I found that one especially fun. The last thing we did in writing was we got to read each other's interactive stories! I think that was the best part of writing.
For the last subject on this very special day was health. The day before, us girls had watched the girl version of "Growing Up." Today we watched the opposite, the boy’s version. In the other classes, the boys watched the girl's version of "Growing Up." I found it was a little uncomfortable. But I knew it was life, and it was very important information.
Sadly, this very special day did come to an end. For the last half an hour or so, we did our assignment notebooks, and had a snack. The reason we had a snack was because we had some extra chips from the pizza party. YUMMY!! As we packed up went out the door, we knew there would be no more Tuesdays left at Willowdale Elementary.
It was a Monday morning, but it wasn't a usual one because everyone wasn't tired and sleepy. Why? It's because there were only 3 1/2 days of school left. I was very happy but we had to realize that we were still in school and we had to pay attention. First off we had to do a spelling sheet that was on our desk. In my opinion it was very easy and I was done in a blink. For the rest of the time we could work on any homework that we had or just read.
1+1=2. Next was math. Today basically all we did was we worked on a review sheet that was due Wednesday. It was 3 pages long, front and back.
We cut math short and went into the computer lab. While we were in there we worked on our Interactive Stories, which are stories in which you get to choose what you are going to do next. Basically, we transferred all our writing into the Internet in story form. It took a while, but it was really easy.
When we were finally done with that, we scurried off to music. In music we watched a movie about singers making a song to raise money for people living in Africa. They raised millions and millions of dollars. Wow!
When we came back from music, we had a spelling test. This was kind of unusual, but it was because we were at Track and Field Day at Millard West last Friday.
After that we fell into the rhythm of a normal school day by sinking into our SQUIRT books. We also got a sucker from Brittney for her birthday. Mmm!
Miss Everts woke us up by saying that we were going to watch a Bill Nye movie on space. We have been studying space for a long time now and we have a test tomorrow on it! Miss Everts also said we must have 5 facts we didn't know written down in our notebooks and any extra were extra credit. That led us right up to lunch.
Lunch followed that, as I already said. I had pepperoni pizza that turned out to be cheese pizza. I didn't mind too much. After we gulped down our food, we headed out to recess, as usual.
When we stumbled into the classroom we were all red- faced and hot. We cooled down by listening to our Teacher Read book, The Gentlemen Outlaw and Me- Eli, which is very good and which I would recommend. We actually finished the book.
After that, Miss Everts and the other 5th grade teachers divided the 5th grade into groups. We watched different health videos and discussed them.
"Remember, we had a Morning Sheet due tomorrow," Miss Everts reminded us. We did assignment notebooks next.
Did you study for your science test? Of course, everyone did. It showed when we redid a Quizzler on space. When we were finished, we showed Miss Everts our score or took it home to finish it there.
"Yay!" Everyone cheered when Mr. Vincent came in with his keyboarding supplies. He taught us 4 more keys, the Q, Z, comma, and apostrophe. Hey, look; I'm using the comma so I must have been taught well.
When we were done working our fingers off, we packed up and went home, but not without gaining a few class points from Miss Everts for having a great day.
As I happily walked into the fifth grade hallway I noticed it was a lot quieter than usual. This was because last night was our Fifth Grade Farewell, and lots of people were screaming and yelling during the movie and during tug of war. Not to brag, but the girls won four times in a row! Good job!
Now to get back to Friday, wait Friday? This is even better, after today we have two whole days of complete relaxation or just to have fun. To put the cherry on top today was track and field day. Fourth and fifth graders get to go to Millard West. There we get to have fun doing our track and field day events.
When I got into the classroom and looked at the board, I saw that there was nothing on the board except for a message that said to do the spelling sheet on our desks. We had to fill in the bubble next to the correctly spelt words. Just then the bell rang, and we all stood to say the Pledge of Allegiance, then the one and only Kid of Character Pledge. It was 8:50 when Miss Everts started to talk to us about the rules of track and field day.
At 9:00 the busses arrived and we, the fourth and fifth graders, were about to have the best day of elementary school. When we finally got to Millard West we all got settled. The first runners were the fifth grade boys running the 400 meter run, which was all the way around the track. After the all the fifth grade boys were the fifth grade girls. Then the fourth graders running all the way around the track, as this was happening my very own teacher, Miss Everts was saying “Go”, by shooting the gun into the air to start the race. After the 400 meter races, came the 200 meter races, which was half way around the track. Once again, after the fifth graders raced by, came fourth grade. The people who weren’t racing were eating in the bleachers, or cheering on the runners! Last but definitely not least was the people running the 50 meters. After all the 50 meter runners were the team races. First were the girl’s teams, then the boy’s teams. Next, the coed teams. My team won! Then we took a break and ate our snacks or lunches. While some were doing this others were playing with their water bottles, racing across the field, and some, like me, were tumbling in the field.
About an hour later we all split into our groups for the field events. There were three different groups, the long jump, the soccer kick, and the baseball throw. The long jump looked really, really difficult. When we were done with this, we all played tug of war. Everts class won three times in a row, and then got beat by fourth graders. Some of the kids did the three legged race, and some did the shoe kick, personally I did really bad at both of them. After a long, hot day of fun it was time to pick up and go back to school. Everyone picked up two things, and loaded everything on to the bus. As we left, we were all thinking we couldn’t wait till next year’s track and field day. When we got back to school we were all talking about how much fun we had at Millard West. We all went into the gym for awards, if you got first place, you got a blue ribbon. To our surprise we got popsicles. When our sweating bodies got back to our classrooms, we did our assignment notebooks. Then we all packed up, cleaned the inside and outside of our desks. Then we left wondering what next week, the last week of school, would bring us, but for now we just wanted to race out of the classroom and have some fun!
Wow it was hot outside as we entered the classroom. Today was Thursday and the day before the 4th and 5th grade Track and Field day, which is really fun. Luckily, we started off today with only a spelling sheet, which wasn't the hardest yet.
As the clock said 9:00 AM, we went our separate ways to different math classes. Today 6th grade math did an amazing thing by all getting A's on their test. In the main classroom, we did a math review game the entire hour and 25 minutes. I call it the Math card problem review game. What you do is you take questions and answer them in 1 minute. You'd think we were having a recess in math class by how much fun we were having.
What’s this I hear?.... I think... wait... oh I've got it, we're listening to our garage band songs and the longest one was an amazing 3 minutes and 49 second by Tanner. They were all great, just as good as a frog is at hopping.
We made our way scurrying along as we entered the classroom. The paper-passers passed out the papers and once again we did a spelling sheet. "Move away" I said because I was dive-bombing into my squirt book as we finished our spelling sheet. I am reading a mystifying comedy called "Something's Fishy at McDonald Hall" about 2 pranksters who are getting blamed for stuff they didn't do and they must figure out who did it.
Something was disturbing my reading when I recognized it was Miss Everts' voice saying please stop reading. By then I had finished my book. Now our classmate Nash shared his memory bag about his book. I really like his connections with the book because they were so out of the ordinary.
Wait a second; what’s this, Miss Everts is pulling a T.V. into the classroom. Quickly, make a bonus guess what this is. How'd you know it was a heath video called "Feelings Inside Outside Upside", which was about how you will start to have different feelings as you get older? In the middle of the excellent movie we put down the popcorn to answer some questions Miss Everts asked us. After putting more butter on we watched the rest of the movie.
Do you know what a Meteorite is? Well if you don't you should start studying because we had 2 tricky worksheets to complete. Only to save the day we got a handy vocabulary glossary that told us what we needed to know for the answers. Spelling Aces were getting passed around for other definitions until all the sudden Miss Everts says, "Lets get ready for lunch." I glance at my watch which yells out loud, " It's only 12:45 PM" so we should wait 10 minutes, or should we? To our special surprise, we got to go early to lunch and recess which was so hot we all got scorched and a bit tan.
Sweating from the heat we walked panting like my dog after a walk back in to the classroom. The keyboarding gear was set up, but there was no Mr. Vincent. Then we were informed that Miss Everts was giving us the following letters P, V, X, M and of coarse right now I'm using them well.
What’s this? We're going back in time to the gold rush, well not really, but we went into teacher read and we are still reading "The Gentleman Outlaw” while 3 people at a time went and edited their Interactive Story and put it in the server. We did this until 2:40, when we did the wonderful assignment notebooks. The overhead was turned on and we saw that we were playing Newsbowl for 20 minutes. My question was, what is given the Tony awards? Well you may have known that it is for Broadway Music but I didn't.
Today for 30 minutes we had an author who is only in 8th grade, almost a freshman, named Katie Miller come in and talk to us. Her series is called the "Oracle of the Horses" and it has 5 books. But she has only finished the first. Once when she was writing it, she lost about 300 pages on her computer. After a heart attack, not literally, and some screaming her mom came and got it all back somehow. She did a book signing at Barnes & Nobles along with her friend Kelly who was the illustrator. Then she said good-bye and left, we picked up 14 pieces of trash off the floor and walked out of school knowing that tonight we would meet again at the 5th grade Farewell, which is our very fun graduation that took place at Russell Middle School. Russell is where most kids are going to go to school next year. But before we got there we walked into the sun, which could have baked you alive as we left this school day.
Some people played kick ball and some people played basketball we waited for the bell to ring. Then we heard the bell ring. As we walked in we saw a one sided sheet on our desk.
After thirty minutes of working on the one sided sheet we decided to work on math. Guess what we did, a review on all the things we learned in math.
Next was gymsic it was the last day because next week was the end of school. We got to use these parachutes to shoot up balls.
After gymsic we watched a movie about genes. They showed us about how some genes are dominant and some genes are recessive. Then we got to design a character with traits we picked out of a bag.
Then we went into a relaxing time Squirt.
Next, it was time for unit studies. We checked our review sheets. Then we got a quizzler to practice for our test.
Finally, we had lunch and study hall. Everyone was ready for a new day.
Hooray! Today is Wednesday so that means that we get out of school at 2:00! When I walked into the classroom from the chaos in the hallway I saw that on my desk was a short spelling sheet! Yaaaa! Luckily I got it done before it was time for math. One of the questions was Library is to books as is to paintings. Yep, your right the answer is museum!
Finally, it was time for math. We didn't do much in math today because we only had until 9:45 this morning. We sure did use all that time though. We had whole 3 pages of math review. It had all kinds of things from fractions to story problems. I hope that everyone got theirs done.
Next what was sure to be interesting was gymsic. Today for the one time this year we worked with parachutes! We even did something were you catapult balls into the air like the parachute is an erupting volcano! Wow, that is a lot of fun.
Once we got back from an exciting time in gymsic we got right back into our classroom and started into health. In health today we watched a movie about genetics! Did you know that our genes even tell us how big our nose is going to be when we become adults? After we watched the video we picked some genetic traits from a paper bag. After that we drew a person according to the traits that we drew!
At last it was time to relax and get sucked into our great books! I also noticed as I looked around I saw people enjoying their scrumptious snacks of crackers and Chex Mix.
Miss Everts told us to stop in a good place at the end of Squirt but I don't think anybody wanted to stop. Next we went in to our never-ending science class. In science today we didn't have to write any notes! All we did today was check our review sheet so we could study on it for our test on Tuesday. For the last part of science we got a new Quizzler on our handheld. A Quizzler is like a quiz on your handheld and this one was on space! We have to do well on it too because Miss Everts is going to check how good we are doing on Friday. An example of a question is Inner Planets are what? The answer is small and made of rock!
Guess what was next. Yep you were right, next was lunch. After lunch was recess and man it was really nice outside today!
Next was finally the last part of the day. At this time we could work on our little homework that we have gotten assigned over the day. Miss Everts also read the teacher read book to us. The book that Miss Everts is reading is The Gentlemen Outlaw and Me, Eli. We are just barely not done with the book. I sure hope that we finish it tomorrow. At the end of the day I was laughing as I walked out of the school into the magnificent day.
The sun seemed to make the day look better. Even though I knew it was already going to be great. We started the sunny day off with an easy morning sheet on Plains Indians. Almost everyone finished that. Math was a flash, with only two pages in our math journal that was reviewing what we already knew. One of the easy math sheets was reviewing area of polygons and triangles. The other, a simple math box. "Hurry! We need that ring!" Teammates shouted at each other in either corner of the frigid gym. As much as people sweat in there, the gym always seems to have an uncomfortable, cool, temperature. In gym we played "Steal the rings." In this breath taking game, you try to get all your team's color of rings form the other team. The most exciting part I thought was the relay races we had done earlier. Next was one of my favorite subjects, SQUIRT. SQUIRT is when we finally get a break from all the hard work we've done. Not only do we get to enjoy our great, fantastic books, but also enjoy a tasty snack if people have them. As I sat in my chair to get ready for the adventure my book had for me, I saw everyone's face. All had different expressions. Some worried, some excited, some sad, and so on. But I could tell everyone's book was good. Some had trouble to get their faces unattached from their books as we entered the doors to health. In health we read about how fast we grow (which is called a growth spurt.) Did you know that girls would usually be taller than boys until they're 12? Also, we are learning what is a good healthy diet for our body. A simple review sheet followed it, to make the day better and easier. After, we watched a video on healthy ideas.
Wow! What a day so far! Luckily, lunch was next to restore our lost energy. The delicious smell of chicken nuggets filled the air as we entered the cafeteria. (Which is really the gym, but you get my point.) After, we had a thrilling recess, especially since it was really nice weather. Everyone seemed to have panicked faces as we came back in from the gorgeous day. Why you ask? A genre test was next. I thought for sure I would flunk it, but I did really well. I think everyone ended up doing great. After that difficult test (some thought of it like that) we got to work on our surprising Interactive Story. Why I call it surprising is because in it you write like the reader is the character in the story and they get to make the choice. I really enjoy doing these because they are puzzling and fun. As we continued to work on our interactive stories, Miss Everts read us our teacher read book. We all held our breath as she read. It was extra exciting because we were toward the ending and you know how endings are. " I, Y, R, D,......." Mr. Vincent is teaching us keyboarding. He will call out letters and we will have to type them with out looking. It's a great way for us to strengthen our muscles. We always can't wait for keyboarding! The bell rang giving us the signal schools out. As I walked out the sun once more seemed to make the afternoon look cheery.
First, I walked into the classroom and checked in. After I got settled, I did the assignment on the board which was a to read a story and answer several questions.
Next was my favorite subject: math. We had a ton to do, three pages with a partner, then one by ourselves, but I worked hard and got it finished.
After Ms. Everts said to put everything away and we did spelling.
Then we went to music. We spent the whole time listened to our garage bands or the music we conducted on the computer.
When we got back to the classroom we finished spelling and golfed for candy.
After we were done, I did some sweet moves as I dove into my book and ate my snack. The book I'm reading is so funny.
We had reading next and learned about human growth, we had a worksheet to do. While we did that Ms. Everts did teacher read earlier than usual.
We went to lunch after reading. I had cold lunch like usual and I just talked to my friends at recess. But, I played kickball with some of the kindergarteners for a little bit.
After. Ms. Anderson came in, and talked to us about our test on genres tomorrow.
Next, we had science, which was only a review worksheet on space. I didn't get very far but some of the class got done. While we worked hard, Ms. Everts read a few more pages of our teacher read book.
We did assignment notebooks a little early and then had Mr. Vincent come and teach us the new keys on our keyboards U and C. We packed up after that and said our goodbyes to our nice teacher, Ms. Everts.
As I was walking into school on the concrete sidewalk I realized that it was one Friday the 13th and two my class was going to have a substitute today so I better straighten up. As I basically jogged into the classroom the bell rang! Mrs. Stoddard (our substitute) counted the lunch account, 5 cold lunches, 2 milk, 3 A lunch, 14 B lunch, and 1C lunch. We quietly went about working on our morning assignment. Today we had a spelling worksheet. One thing we worked on was the i vowel sound, like the word collide. That went by like a racecar. As on the board it tells you to do the math problems on the back of the sheet as written on the board. Here's an example, if you take half of me and triple the result you get 30! Okay, well I’ll let you figure that out as we go on. 1,2,3 10 marbles equal one donut. Today in math we were balancing scales! Five pages of math equals a lot of homework! Our assignment was pages 344, 345, 346, 347, and 348. It was a hard assignment but hopefully everyone got it all done. Following the hard assignment we got a study link! Since it is getting close to the end of the year, we better work harder because Report Cards are coming out soon! Yummy, yummy in my tummy! As we were taking our spelling tests Maggie and Casey passed out their treats, for their birthdays! Maggie brought delicious cupcakes with coffee frosting! Now Casey brought Bubble Gum, chewy and sticky. We each got 5 pieces of gum. The whole year our class was working on getting 100% on our reading charts. We never reached that goal, but were VERY close several of times. Thinking of that, we were reading our SQUIRT books. I am reading, Alex Ryan, Stop That. It is very humorous and funny. My favorite character is Alex. Well, so far. If you want to read this book, well then I’d go look at some bookstores! As Mrs. Stoddard stopped us from reading our SQUIRT books we looked up on the chalkboard and figured out the puzzles. We went over some sentences and found the verb and adverb. Then the paper passers passed out the grammar sheet. It was fairly easy. If anyone needs to change for the talent show tryouts. You may go do that right now. As a few people walked out of the classroom to the restrooms, the rest of the class worked on the grammar sheet. Soon, 11:45 came around the clock as we lined up. For real this time Mrs. Stoddard stopped us and told us to line up in a straight line. We were all very excited to watch the performers. As they did their amazing acts, we watched. When we got into the classroom, we voted for the most talented people. I am not going to say whom I voted for though. My stomach wasn't really growling, but I had to go to lunch anyway. I had cold lunch. Lucky day for Miss. French's class! They earned 800 points in music so they got to walk down to Blimpies. Well, I bet they had a fun time. But don't go thinking that we didn't get 800 points. Oh, we did! Yesterday we had a water fight. It was kind of chilly, but as you got hit with water you got warmer. As we were coming back from recess we were all exhausted. Mrs. Stoddard picked up the book we were reading for teacher read. That book would be The Gentlemen Outlaw Me-Eli . We read for a good 20 minutes. I love looking at the stars on a warm night. Don't you? Well, that is exactly what we are learning about in science. The stars and planets! We read pages 68,69,70,71,72,73,74, and 75. We took notes after reading. Then the paper passers passed out a science worksheet. It was 3 pages long. But EASY! YEAH! We all cheered as Mr. Vincent came in and was going to do keyboarding. He said today we were going to be learning the keys period and left shift. They were one of the hardest keys I have ever done! As he left we all were mad that keyboarding was over. As we were one day closer to summer we were all relieved. We said bye to Mrs. Stoddard as the clock read 3:29, and we were all about ready to jump out of our pants because we were 1 minute away from the weekend!
As we began another day at school, we saw a pink spelling sheet on our desks. We did almost anything you could do with a spelling word on that sheet. I thought it was a simple enough sheet.
After we did the sheet we entered into a new unit for math. We did a math box and some other pages on one thing balancing with another thing. I like this unit plenty.
After Math we lifted off into the world of Science. Today we studied our very own Solar System. I already knew a lot about the Solar System so I didn't think the two sheets we did were very hard.
After Science we went into S.Q.U.I.R.T. Squirt means it is time to get into the book! Right now I am reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
As we got done with reading our books we went into Music. This Music though was different than normal, we had a water gun and water balloon fight! I thought it was a great party.
As we went back to our classroom, Mrs. Anderson talked to us about genres. The genres she talked about were Classics and Traditional literature. I do not like those kinds of genres.
Next, we went into reading. We talked about the author of "What's the Big Idea Ben Franklin". I have no opinion on the matter.
After Reading we went into lunch. Today they had a good lunch this time. Lunch was uneventful.
After Lunch, we typed on our interactive stories on our palm. I got mine's done so I could type down my Roving Reporter story. I think our Interactive stories weren’t too hard.
After typing down our stories, we went into Keyboarding. In this lesson, we learned how to type, without looking at, c, g, and n. I thought it was a great lesson.
All of a sudden, the school bell rings. The day sure passed very quickly. And so we get out of school, waiting for another day at school
RING! The bell rang and we all walked into the class excited because today was Wednesday. Why Wednesday? Because today is Wednesday, the short day!
As we walked in, the day started by Miss Everts saying, "Good morning." On the blackboard, it said to do an editing page. We worked on that until she said, "Please put that away."
Then we went right into Math. We took a test on area and volume. We also we had to finish a math box on page 340.
Then Miss Everts said that it was time to put away our stuff. It's time to get ready for gymsic. We got to make a May Pole.
After that, we did Science. We reviewed material about stars and galaxies and then we did a review.
Bet you can guess what we went into. We went into Squirt. We ate our delicious snack and began reading our wonderful books.
Next we started our writer's workshop and did a narrative story and started typing it.
After that, we made great gifts for our buddies. As Miss Everts called us up, the rest worked on art. We had to make something with mold clay.
Then we delivered our gifts to our buddies and went right back to into our class to begin teacher read. Miss Everts was reading The Gentlemen Outlaw and Me and Eli.
After that, we had to get ready to go for the day. So we said good-bye to our favorite teacher ever.
Today was NOT a usual day. You will just have to wait, though, because I can't tell you until I get to the part of the day when we had Law Day. By the way, it happened at two o' clock in the afternoon. Anyway, you might as well read about what happened for the rest of the day.
First on our schedule, we had a "Time For Kids" magazine quiz on our desk. Luckily, we could use our magazines to look up the answers.
Then, we had math. About six of us left the room as quiet as mice. The rest of us had to do two worksheets. One was on multiplying decimals. The other was on dividing decimals. We also worked on a geometry unit on an application on the computers.
When Miss Everts said it was time for gym, we put our assignments back as slow as sun seems to come in March. We had a good time in gym, though. We got to play baseball. I do have to admit, we were a little disappointed when we learned that we had to take a flexed arm hang test.
When it was time for SQUIRT, Alexandra got to sit and read her book on the couch because it was her birthday yesterday. When SQUIRT was over, we went into Writers' Workshop.
Today, we got to make a map of our Interactive Story. An Interactive Story is a story that goes on our Palms. You get to choose what to do after each part of the story. Every time you choose an option, you are led to another part of the story. After about half an hour of working on that, it was time for science.
In science, we took a quiz. Many of us were excited because Miss Everts told us we could use our notes, but not our books. The people who took good notes knew they had one hundred percent in the bag! We had already copied all the information we needed into our notebooks. After the quiz we took some MORE notes about galaxies.
After lunch and recess, our class settled down into their seats. We finished a sheet about our sundials with our partners. We had to write what we learned, and the steps we took to do the sundial experience. We also drew what the sundial looked like each hour.
Finally, it was time for LAW DAY! A lawyer named Doug Law (his last name really was Law) came and talked to us about, you guessed it, laws! Ms. French's class came in to listen to our guest speaker too. Mr. Law talked to us about different courts, like Civil Court. The Civil Court is for when someone disturbs someone else's property. He told us that if you want to be a lawyer when you get a job, you have to be good in math, English, and science. At the end of our law extravaganza, we each got a "Lawyer Survival Packet". It included a folder, a pencil, and a note pad. Mr. Law said that was really all you needed to be a lawyer.
At three o' clock we were sad that Mr. Law had to go, but we were "excited" that Mr. Vincent came in so we could learn more about touch typing. Touch typing is when you type without looking at the keys. Today we learned the keys "O" and "T". We also evaluated each other on the keys we already knew. Mr. Vincent helped us practice orally, and he wrote letters on the board, which we then typed onto our Palms.
So, now you know all about our exciting Tuesday in Miss Everts' class. We went all the way from a quiz about a magazine, to learning how to type without looking at any keys. Don't forget about our science quiz, or Mr. Law!
What a wonderful day it was as we walked into the great classroom. We all looked on our desks and found a TFK. It was on deserts and how people were quickly destroying them. We were stopped by Miss Everts who explained that we had to work on our sundial. We went outside to see where the shadow would be. We came back in and waited for our next assignment.
Today was pure and simple. Miss Everts explained that we had 3 sheets to do in math, and an extra credit sheet if we wanted to do that. I did the extra credit and all the sheets. All these sheets were on area, volume, and coordinates. There was a question like this, find the area of the triangle. Do you know how to find area in general? If you don’t, to bad! It’s for me to know and for you to learn. As 10:00 approached, we all hurried through our math, even Miss Everts hates that. We went outside and recorded the shadow on the sundial.
We scrambled back inside and we managed to get the spelling pretest in before our special. Miss Everts said the first word, describe. I put down letters to finish the word, D-E-S-C-R-I-B-E. It went on like this for a total of 15 words. After we got them checked, Miss Everts put up some other words to use. Soon, everyone lined up and I bet you know what comes next.
If you guessed music you were right! Well, at least, it’s called music, even though not much music was heard today. You’ll see why if you keep reading. Well, we didn’t play badly or we didn’t get in trouble but we got to plan out our water gun party on Thursday! Hands rose up so they could share their ideas. Music was easy, and we got to listen to Stevie Wonder.
We walked into the classroom and we trudged once again outside to record our sundial. As soon as we marked it we went to our seats.
Read, read, and read some more! We all got warped into our unimaginable books. After 30 minutes or so, Miss Everts said to put away our books.
We read the story called What’s the Big Idea Ben Franklin. We got to work with a partner if we wanted to, I chose to work with a partner. As we read the story we had to make a time line of Ben Franklin’s life.
After 10 minutes we leaped into space. In science, we took a lot of notes, but there wasn’t as much as other days. Tomorrow, we are finishing our lessons on stars. Did you know that the Young Blue Giant is one of the hottest stars in the universe? Miss Everts also warned us that we are having a dreadful quiz on stars tomorrow. Everyone read the assigned pages and took notes on all the bold words.
Our stomachs couldn’t stop groaning when it was lunchtime. We could have pancakes, french toast sticks, or an American wrap. We ate all we could eat and then we went and wasted our new energy on recess. Why is it after lunch?
We got back from recess and went into teacher read. Miss Everts said we had to make a letter to give to our buddies. That took me all of teacher read.
Afterwards, we got our palms and read Fling It interactive stories. You get to read a little bit and then you get to choose what happens next! Today, we planning what ours will be like. I was bursting with ideas.
Soon, Mr. Vincent came in and we got to practice key boarding. He makes us act like it’s the greatest thing on Earth. We learned the keys R and I. This key boarding lesson was really short. We went over some stress relievers and then he had to go.
Whoa! What a day. This was a really long day to me. I don’t care what anybody else thinks. The bell rang and we gathered our stuff and walked out. It was such a nice day, to bad I got a ride in a hot sweaty car.
Wow! What a nice day! It wasn't too cold or too hot for safety patrol.
As we all came inside, we saw that we had a sheet on our desk. It was about Puerto Rico, and how they want to become a state.
In Math, we worked on a review sheet. It was brain racking!
In gym, we played a game that was like baseball.
After gym, we had our weekly spelling test. Then, we jack-knifed into our books while some of us ate our deliciously scrumptious snacks.
Well, what do you know? It was time to go to the Russell Orientation. We walked to Russell because it was close. While we were there, we eat lunch, which consisted of pizza, milkshakes, and french fries. Then, we watched an I-movie about the first day of school. It was really cool! Then, we toured the classrooms and asked the teachers lots of questions. It was fun to see what our new school looked like. Then, we meet our teachers and went back to our elementary school.
When we got back to school, we had to read pages 47-54 in our science book and take notes on it. Then, we filled out our assignment notebooks. While Miss Everts was signing assignment notebooks, we set up newsbowl.
What a beautiful day it was as we all left for the weekend, and we all couldn't wait for the adventures that will await
Maggie, check, Michael, check, Alex, check, Austin, check. That is what I did from 8:45-9:00 a.m. this morning since I was homework monitor. I was the only homework monitor, because Tanner came late and he is supposed to help me make sure that we have everyone's assignments from yesterday, but today Tanner was late so I had to count off 25 kids papers in 3 assignments which means I counted off 75 papers. Phew! It sure felt like I counted twice as much as that. While I was counting papers everyone else was working in their editing booklets on a page about the book we read on Tuesday called "Name that American". It was told like a game show with Uncle Sam as the host. But it also gave you a lot of information. Did you know that Gutzon Borglum sculpted Mount Rushmore? He died before it was completed, so his son finished it.
Next, was math, which is one of my favorite subjects in school. My favorite is keyboarding! Just kidding, this is my favorite subject, but don't tell Mr. Vincent that I told you this.
First off, to really start off the day, we thought back to yesterday about what we had learned. We talked about the area of the base, which in mathematical form is written as uppercase B. The formula of the area of the base is simple; all you have to do is take the base (*) the height. We did pages 332 & 333, which was on finding the area of triangles and parallelograms. We also did a mathbox and a study link. At 9:35, we all lined up to go to the computer lab for garage band in music. At 9:55, we came back to finish up in math. Once we were done with our assignments, we cut out our sundials.
Meanwhile, Miss Everts beamed one of us, Fling It, a game where you choose the ending, and each one of us beamed it to our neighbors. It was like dominoes. But before we could play Fling It, we had to finish our spelling worksheets.
Next, we shifted gears to hyper drive as we blasted off into space. During science we took notes that took as long as the Empire State building if it were tipped over on its side. Fortunately, we finished our notes with just enough time for us to get our review sheet finished also.
When we finished up with science, gravity pulled us back to Earth, and we all created a big deluge of rain as we drifted off into our S.Q.U.I.R.T books. For all of us who read the required amount of reading minutes for each month we got to go to the Willowcam room and get a free book and cookie. I chose, The Beloved Dearly. It is a Golden Sower for next year.
Next, we crammed in a grammar worksheet right before lunch. Almost all of us finished it too. We went to lunch, then recess. Then we came back and had teacher read so all of us got done with our grammar worksheet. Plus, most of us got much more done.
After that we went to a musical about Lewis & Clark. The musical was performed by a professor at Creighton. He was a very good pianist. He could talk as fast as a Jackrabbit being chased by a ferocious hound. We strutted back to the classroom to stretch our legs that had been sitting on the cold hard tile floor for about 45 minutes. When we got back, Miss Everts read for about 10 more minutes. Then we filled out our planners. Then Mr. Vincent came in with the ELMO, and we all cheered. It was time for keyboarding! Before we knew it, it was time to leave. We all moaned and groaned and clucked our tongues. We all scurried out the door as the bell rang as we tried to give ourselves as much time to play before we had to leave for school again tomorrow.
Many people lingered around the hall after the first bell rang. I saw lots of people getting in little groups and talking about the long and N O T, not fun thing we were going to do in gym. We were going to be running the mile today, and I was not looking forward to it. It would be long and meek. But as I was walking into the classroom with my friend, Nash, I remembered I didn't have my snack. I ran and got it out of my backpack. Take two, I was thinking to myself as I reentered the classroom. On my desk was the palm charger for the Roving Reporter that Ms. Everts ask me to go put in my pack. Not again! I thought to myself in an angry manner. As I enter the room yet once again, I thought take three and hoped it was last time for at least for awhile. Finally, I could get started with my work. The morning worksheet was dealing with the TFK that Brennon told us about in his great roving reporter yesterday. The sheet was a crossword puzzle.
"Please, put away your worksheet and get out your math notebook,” said Ms. Everts. With all the noise from the roaring children moving very swiftly to their boxes, I would have thought I was at the Super Bowl by how loud it was. In case you did not know, we are in math and we are about to go down to the computer lab for Larson’s Math. The section that we were working on was Graphing and Probability. It was fun because it was like a ....VIDEO GAME! When we got back to the classroom, we reviewed how to divide and multiply decimals. I even got it done in five minutes. It was easy.
The time had come and I didn't like it, when Mrs. Lindaman yells on your mark, get set, GO! The awful mile begins. We are running the mile, but Nash and I are walking. It seemed like everyone around us was in fast forward. We did manage to run eight stupid laps. We got a bad time but that's okay. The cool thing was that Ms. Everts ran the mile with us. It was real slam'n. As every tired body lingered into the classroom, we were as quiet as a baby sleeping because no one had the energy to be loud. We were so tire. As we relaxed in our desk, it felt like lying on a cloud.
Ms. Everts announced that we were going into spelling next. We were all so tired that we didn't care. We heard we had to do the not so fun Show You Know, but Ms. Everts gave us a break and let us do sentences instead.
Finally, the best part of the day, the Big Dipper, the cherry on top of the ice cream, the feeling you get when your mom brings you lunch on your birthday. Put all that together and what does it make? SQUIRT! Even better, I got a pillow and we got a longer SQUIRT then normal. When Ms. Everts told us that we had to stop, it felt like a bully took my best present on my birthday.
Then as sneaky as a rat, wait, are rats even sneaky? Well anyway, the string students tried to sneak out to strings five minutes early. They got caught so I guess that rats aren't that sneaky. They had to come back and do time with the rest of us. While they came back, they learned about cause and effect for five more minutes. During this part of the day, I kind of daydream. Wait, I'm getting off track. The main point is that today, Ms. Everts made it fun. She told us little details about how to remember cause and effect.
I really did not want to go into reading until I found out what we were doing. We were acting out a play that we read by ourselves the day before. I was a judge in the story. It was fun and by the end I wanted to do it again.
Lunch! It's a good subject. I love it! I JUST DON'T LOVE THE SCHOOL LUNCH! (Underline, highlight, and then circle it that.)
Then a great part of the day began, teacher read. I like it because you are able to listen to the story and work on homework or draw. It is in second place for the best part of school! (Laugh)
As we were going into science, our buddies brought us May Day baskets. It was really awesome. I got a huge amount of candy.
Then we buzzed into the stars, shadows, and sundials...Science. We learned how shadows change a lot during the day and how they helped to tell time when they didn't have any clocks. We also learned about different stars. I learned that right now the Big Dipper is upside down. It was cool subject to learn about.
Last, but not least, we did typing. We learned the home row. I really enjoy typing, so I was sad when it was over.
Wait, the day is over already? It has to be because the clock says it’s 3:30. Time really does fly when you’re having a great time, but all good things must come to an end. So I gave Ms. Everts a hug and left the building.
