First blog of the year 07-08

Welcome to Mrs. Beard’s fifth grade class blog. It’s been an exciting year so far and we’ve been working hard. We’ve just finished our ELO’s. It was hard but we made it through. All fifth graders at Willowdale get to use a palm throughout the year. We each get our own palm and we have to be responsible for it. We sometimes have homework on them and we get to take them home and after we are done with our homework we can play games on them if we have free time.
We even used our palms to study for the ELO. We studied for our test on Quizzler. Quizzler is a program on our palms that asks questions for Social Studies. We have also used the palms in spelling to help us study for our spelling tests. In science we used the palms to create Sketchy’s. In our Sketchy’s we created animations of the respiratory system, circulatory system, and digestive system. We are still working on finishing our Sketchy’s so that we can share them with the class.
We just started doing literature circles. We have five groups and the books we are reading are Castle in the Attic, R.T., Margaret, The Rats of NIMH, Chronicles of Narnia, and James and the Giant Peach. After we read the book we get to do a project on the book. Some groups are doing a newspaper or creating a bulletin board. We are already halfway through our books. Each person in the group has a different job to do each week. The jobs are Word Finder, Connector, Passage Picker, Discussion Director, and Illustrator.
In Math we have been learning the properties of multiplication. They are distributive property, associative property, and commutative property. The distributive property lets us break numbers into smaller parts so they are easier to multiply. The associative property lets us group numbers together in parenthesis so they are easier to multiply. The commutative property lets us switch numbers around so we can multiply them in our head.
In Science we have learned about cells, the respiratory system, circulatory system, and the digestive system. White blood cells are one type of cell. Their job is to fight off germs and they live for 2 weeks. Red blood cells are in your blood and they live a month. There are many more kinds of cells, but we won’t name them all! The respiratory system gets the air to your lungs and also gets oxygen into your blood. The circulatory system is your heart. Your heart pumps blood to the rest of your body. The digestive system helps you churn food to get nutrients to other parts of your body.
In Writing we are learning the 6 traits to help us do well on the AWA. The traits are Ideas and Content, Voice, Word Choice, Organization, Conventions, Sentence Fluency.
In Reading we are reading lots of stories such as Roberto Clementa, Rosa Parks, Elena, and Hot and Cold Summer. We'll keep you updated on new events weekly, so keep an eye out. See you then!
