Today in art we had an awesome time! Ms. Sanborn taught us all about an American artist named Stuart Davis. Davis made collages. She showed us many of his paintings, so we then began making our own winter collages. Before starting we looked at her previous students' pieces for ideas. After starting I said, "this is hard and fun in all in one!" Many of us made snowflakes and snowmen. Ms. Sanborn told us we had to have at least 5 words on the poster board, 10 objects, and many colors. The letters and designs have to be cut out, not drawn. That's what happened today in art, winter collages.
Do you like division? Well if you don't , the study guide we got today was not for you! This was our Unit 4 study guide and it was all about division. In this study guide there were division story problems, but only three. I remember the first two problems were about “friendly numbers”. “Friendly numbers” is a different and new type of way to divide. The problem with them is that many parents do not know what it they are. Last there were a lot of regular division problems. These are some of the kinds of problems we had on our study guide today and these kinds of problems will be on the math test on Friday. Wish me luck!
Do you like science presentations? If you do then read on. Today we finished up our Sketchy presentations in science. The Sketchy was on the water cycle. The things we had to have were evaporation, condensation, sublimation, and precipitation. I had all of those on our Sketchy. Anyway there were only a few people that had to share. We learned a lot from these Sketchys. I learned that water goes up in the air as water vapor. Okay we already knew that, but you get the point.
Hi! I'm Jenny. Today I am reporting on the fifth grade/first grade Thanksgiving buddy feast. The fifth and first graders had a wonderful lunch to celebrate the holiday, Thanksgiving. There were all sorts of delicious foods there like cookies, sandwiches, and more. I don't think the food could have been better. Yum! The fifth graders made placemats for their first grade buddies. The first graders did the same. We all wore hats, the fifth graders wore Indian hats and the first grade girls wore pilgrim bonnets. First grade boys wore tall black hats. It was very noisey in that gym. Some people left early on vacation so some people had two buddies instead of one. Isn’t that a thoughtful thing to do? Amy a first grader said, "It was fun seeing our buddies!" I agreed! There were fun hats, placemats, and the food was delicious. It was fun seeing our buddies. That was our Super Thanksgiving feast.
SAC. What did you say? SAC. Today all of the fifth graders at Willowdale got to go to the SAC Museum. At 9:15, all of the fifth graders got on the bus to the SAC Museum. First, we all got stickers to show that we were in the yellow group or the orange group. Then, we all set off to do our activities. In my group, we got to see a movie about space shuttles, and how they work. The movie said that astronauts training can take more than two years, and that they go through virtual reality training to get the feel of what it is like in space. Next, we went into a room that was lit with black lights, and we could see the white on our pants or shirts glowed. In this room, we made rockets. When we were done, we got to shoot the rockets off using these big pumps in the area by the planes. Some of the rockets hit the ceiling, and some even got stuck in the walls. When we were done with that, we went into a room that had lots of different things in it. " I am with you guys", JP said when we were dividing into groups. When the groups had been sorted out, we all went to different stations. There were places to build ships a space station with legos, or with blocks. In other stations you had to design your own costume, and there were these really big booths that had a different topics for every side. The booths had things like Star Trek, Star Wars, the 1960s aliens and also the 1950s space movies and aliens. At the end of our trip, we had about twenty minutes to walk around and look at all of the planes. We saw a ride, but you had to pay five dollars to ride it. Ms. Sanborn told us that we had to find her so she could take our picture for the web page during those twenty minutes. At the end we were all sad to leave, but we all were glad that we had the opportunity to go to the SAC Museum. After all, we got to watch a movie on space shuttles, build our own rockets, and even play with games. Everybody had a great time, and we all had our own favorite parts.
Today in gym we played volleyball. This is a fun team sport. On Monday, it was even more exciting. Everyone was on one side or the other. Our goal was to try and get as many hits back and forth with out the ball hitting the ground. This was challenging, but we got through it with a total of 21 hits in a row. I think we could have done a bit better. Our highest is 36 hits from a week ago. We will have to work harder to beat our past record. It helps that we have some great volleyball players. It would be difficult and fun to play against another fifth grade class, but we are up for it. How about it Mrs. Lindeman? Go team Sanborn Super Students!
Have you ever read part of Island of the Blue Dolphins? Well Ms. Sanborn's class has. After we got to practice from Monday to Thursday, we had a reading test about Island of the Blue Dolphins on Friday. Do you know what the definition of gorged means? Well it means to stuff food into your mouth like at Thanksgiving. The test asked us definitions and questions about Ramo and Karana, who are the main characters in this book. I think you should read the whole book because it sounds like a good book.
In science we learned about water tables, ground water, ice/snow, and reservoirs. There are many different kinds of water sources. We learned that a water table is the level of water in the ground. Ground water are bodies of water like lakes, seas, oceans, rivers and streams. A reservoir is a lake behind a dam. Did you know that most of the ice in the world is located in Greenland and Antarctica? The water table is a 3 dimensional map that tells how much the water level goes up or down. In a drought, the water level goes down. In a rain forest the level of water goes up because of all the rain! It is important to know about water tables when building a home or a building because you can not dig very deep or water will get into the property and your building will not be safe because the foundation will be weak. In conclusion, science today was really fun for the class. We learned interesting facts about the earth and it’s water.
Hello I'm Alex and I going to tell you about what we did in art today. We did a Wassily Kandinsky piece. First we learned about him and then we looked at some of his pieces. Kandinsky was born December 16, 1866 in Moscow, Russia. He died on December 13, 1944 in France. Wassily was one of first creators of pure abstract art. To do our pieces, we drew tons of geometric shapes like circles, squares, and triangles on a large black piece of paper. Next we used oil pastels (craypas) to fill in the shapes. I think this will be a fun art project. don’t you?
Today in music class we sang songs that we did not do last year. One of the songs we sang was "I'm Feeling Good." The next song we sang was "Yes, No, Maybe." We are getting ready for our Winter Musical/Concert. Almost everyone likes the songs we were singing. Lastly we sang "Faith" which is a really funny song at the start. At the end of class we lined up and then we went back to our classroom.
Sanborn Super Students need to get ready for the AWA tomorrow. It is a persuasion test so we have to at least try to study or persuade a family member, a friend, or a relative tonight to prepare for it. Things we need to study and remember are to prewrite (make a web), write a rough draft, revise, and finally write the final draft, but we shouldn’t forget to check it over. We are graded using a 6 trait Rubric we are using to study from tonight. Each column you can get a 1,2,3,4,or a 5 as a grade. You get graded on Focus/Ideas Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Effective Sentences, and Conventions. Sorry, I have to go now and practice for the AWA. See ya!
Who wants to go exploring? Our class and the other two 5th grades already did. In fact, we dressed and pretended we were explorers from way back when. Many of the classes and teachers came to see us dressed up and the listen to our speeches. Some of us were explorers like Amerigo Vespucci, Hernando Cortes and Hernando de Soto. I thought it was so fun to research and become Amerigo Vespucci! I also thought it was fun doing the posters, name plates and learning about all the other explorers, like how some explorers died. Hernando de Soto died of a high fever and the flu. Amerigo Vespucci died of Malaria, and another explorer got stabbed to death. Did you know that we became explorers in fifth grade today and I hope it makes you or someone else want to explore some day!!!!
Today we had our math test for Unit 3 and it was so quiet in the classroom you could hear a pin drop! The test had questions on it like, what is the measure of these angles and don’t use a protractor, there weree multiplication questions , and other stuff like that. It wasn’t too tough. After we finished the test, Ms. Sanborn had us do page 102 in our math journals. She was sure generous today! You know why? If we got every question right on page 102, she gave us a choice of two tickets or a piece of candy! I picked a piece of candy. What a way to start the day, a math test and candy!
Do you want to know what we did for spelling today? Well if you do, read on. In spelling today we wrote, I mean typed each of our words over 10 times. Most people probably liked doing this better than doing Spell It, because we didn’t have to look up definitions. This activity was suppose to help us study for the upcoming test. So in conclusion that is what my class did in spelling today.
Today I'm going to tell you about the 4th, 5th, and 3rd grade assembly, skit, and play. First, I'm going to tell you about the Respect skit in front of the office. There were 5 people in it and it was really short, because the people did it really fast. The people each had phenomonics for their letter. One person had p for polite and another person interrupted her. She glared at him. It was hilarious! Secondly we went to the jump rope assembly. They were from another elementary school in Omaha. It took place at 1:30. First everyone that came jumped all at once (8 people). Then the teacher jumped for a little bit then hopped on his hands and back up again. It was amazing! After that, there were 3 people jumped in and they all jumped in circles around each other. Lastly it was the part when half of the people, four of them jumped all at the same time. It looked cool. In conclusion, the skit, play, and assembly at the end of the day were incredible.
Today’s class Halloween party was fun. First we headed down to the gym to play some games! We had about ten helpers telling us how to play the different games. The rules of the first game were that you had to hit a balloon with a fly swatter about thirteen feet and around a cone and back. I thought it was sort of tough. The second game was fun. At first, I had no clue what to do when I saw the helpers spraying whip cream on 4 people's heads and gave the rest of us cheese puffs. It turns out that the person with whip cream went across from the rest of us in each group and we had to chuck cheese puffs at the whip cream on top of their heads and try to make them stick. Lots of people thought this game was really fun! The final game we played was great! We got to eat some gummy worms. The gummy worms were hanging from a gold pole on a string. We split up into two groups of 12. We had to rush down to where the gummy worms were with our hands behind our backs. Once we got down there we ate one gummy worm and ran back and the next person went. Once all the games were played we went back to the classroom. In the classroom on our desk was a bag full of candy, a pencil, and a juice box. Then Ms. Sanborn called us up to get a cup cake and a waffle cone that we could fill with candy corn, popcorn, and M&M's. That was the end of our Halloween party and the end of the day. After this great party we have trick or treating to look forward to.
Today gym was so fun and let me tell you what we did. First we had to pick partners and my partner was Nikki. We went into the dark gym and we played on the little scooters. Then we got basketballs and hit the pumpkins that were on the walls. After that Nikki and I went out and did 10 push ups and 10 jumping jacks. I hope that gym will be more fun Thursday even though today was fun.
