The focus for spelling this week is working with the long e sound the "y" makes at the end of a word. The "A" list of words are jelly, belly, bunny, funny, furry, hurry, take, came, world, over. The "B" list of words are fluffy, frisky, hungry, thirty, sleepy, really, skate, frame, today, two. The "C" list of words are fun, run, sun, not, got, went, sent, it, in, is.

Try writing the spelling words with two colored crayons such as blue and red, accenting the "y (long e)" in red.

Until next time . . .

The spelling focus is the long "a or a-e" like in the word tame. The "A" list consists of the following words: came, game, gate, late, lake, take, feet, me, know, also. The "B" list of words are: wake, skate, frame, tame, plate, shade, breeze, read, this, time. The "C" list include: we, you, see, mom, dad, love, like, is, go, be.

What might be fun is to show your child how the "e" has a job to do when it is at the end of the word. Compare the words "tim" and "time" or "hat" and "hate".

Make sure when your child is practicing spelling words that it is fun and not a difficult task. Have you tried spelling the words with a beat or rhythm yet?

Until next time . . .

We are beginning the second to the last source book in reading called "Time Together". Our time together seems to be running short! Keep practicing all of the first grade priority words as well as those words your child likes to choose in everyday conversation or writing.
The focus is working with the long "e, ee, and ea".
The "A" list includes words: me, mean, bean, be, beet, feet, low, road, who, door. The "B" list includes words: beach, sea, breeze, deep, sleep, read, throw, groan, that, thing. The "C" list includes words: run, see, she, the, to, up, was, we, will, yes.

Until next time . . .

This week's focus for spelling is the "ow" and "oa" words. We are discussing how the "w" can sometimes act like a vowel. The students know the jingle that goes like this: "a, e, i, o, and u, sometimes y and sometimes w". Also, when the students see the double vowels in a word, they know the jingle," When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking, and the first one always talks long or says it name". In our English language, there are always exceptions to the rules but most of the time, it works!
The "A" list consists of: low, bow, row, road, soap, boat, wiggle, middle, talk, school. The "B" list consists of: throat, groan, coach, show, throw, know, sparkle, little, ride, take. The "C" list consists of: it, like, look, man, me, my, not, of, on, play.

Until next time . . .
