The spelling focus is the long a sound in words that end with "ay" or "ai". The A list consists of: day, say, sail, pail, pay, play, right, high, learn, and join. The B list includes: all the days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, also words raise, right, and paint. Lastly, the C list are following words: day, say, pay, way, play, we, me, see, be, kid.

The "ow" test will be taken this week! We experienced such a disjointed week that it didn't seem fair to test the students having missed two days! The students will be tested over the last week words. The "C" list includes words such as: how, now, cow, down, up, did, went, was, saw, of. The "A" list includes: cow, how, now, down, out, round, nice, face, does, once. The "B" list includes: clown, found, growl, sound, grouchy, frown, south, loud, glance, city.

Sorry about all the confusion! I hope we can get back on track!

The "ow" is the focus for this week! The "C" list includes words such as: how, now, cow, down, up, did, went, was, saw, of. The "A" list includes: cow, how, now, down, out, round, nice, face, does, once. The "B" list includes: clown, found, growl, sound, grouchy, frown, south, loud, glance, city.

We are working with the "C" sounds like "S" rule this week. The tip is to look for the letters i or e after the c. Then read the words and listen for the sound for s. For example in the words: prince, ace, or trace.

The focus for spelling this week is working with the long e sound the "y" makes at the end of a word. The "A" list of words are jelly, belly, bunny, funny, furry, hurry, take, came, world, over. The "B" list of words are fluffy, frisky, hungry, thirty, sleepy, really, skate, frame, today, two. The "C" list of words are fun, run, sun, not, got, went, sent, it, in, is.

Try writing the spelling words with two colored crayons such as blue and red, accenting the "y (long e)" in red.

The spelling focus is the long "a or a-e" like in the word tame. The "A" list consists of the following words: came, game, gate, late, lake, take, feet, me, know, also. The "B" list of words are: wake, skate, frame, tame, plate, shade, breeze, read, this, time. The "C" list include: we, you, see, mom, dad, love, like, is, go, be.

What might be fun is to show your child how the "e" has a job to do when it is at the end of the word. Compare the words "tim" and "time" or "hat" and "hate".

Make sure when your child is practicing spelling words that it is fun and not a difficult task. Have you tried spelling the words with a beat or rhythm yet?

We are beginning the second to the last source book in reading called "Time Together". Our time together seems to be running short! Keep practicing all of the first grade priority words as well as those words your child likes to choose in everyday conversation or writing.
The focus is working with the long "e, ee, and ea".
The "A" list includes words: me, mean, bean, be, beet, feet, low, road, who, door. The "B" list includes words: beach, sea, breeze, deep, sleep, read, throw, groan, that, thing. The "C" list includes words: run, see, she, the, to, up, was, we, will, yes.

This week's focus for spelling is the "ow" and "oa" words. We are discussing how the "w" can sometimes act like a vowel. The students know the jingle that goes like this: "a, e, i, o, and u, sometimes y and sometimes w". Also, when the students see the double vowels in a word, they know the jingle," When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking, and the first one always talks long or says it name". In our English language, there are always exceptions to the rules but most of the time, it works!
The "A" list consists of: low, bow, row, road, soap, boat, wiggle, middle, talk, school. The "B" list consists of: throat, groan, coach, show, throw, know, sparkle, little, ride, take. The "C" list consists of: it, like, look, man, me, my, not, of, on, play.

This week's focus is spelling with "ur", "er", and "ir". The "A" list of words are sir, dirt, bird, burn, fur, her, quit, when, work, and grew. The "B" list of words are shirt, sure, curb, twirl, stern, curve, quick, which, old, and one. The "C" list of words are taken from the first grade priority word list. They are all, am, and, at, be, big, book, by, can, did.

While you are driving in the car, quizzing your child is a good way to reinforce skills such as spelling. It's always fun to throw in a challenging word for them to learn as long as it is age appropriate and could be used in every day writing. The best advice is to keep reviewing!

The "B" list includes: shark, share, short, shoes, wash, brush, squish, crash, made, may. The "C" list include the priority words: end, for, get, good, got, had, have, he, here, him.

This week's spelling words concentrate on the "or". The "A" list of words are: or, for, corn, cork, fork, more, hang, ring, two, from. The "B" list of words are: order, score, floor, bored, ignore, store, nothing, home, how, last. The "C" list of words are: and, are, big, book, by, can, come, day, did, do.

When your child learns the spelling words for the week, brainstorm a list of words to learn that might be used in journal or everyday writing. Some examples might include: weekend, the days of the week, places you might attend or visit, etc. Happy spelling!

This week's focus is the short "u" sound. The A words are: us, bus, bug, mug, must, with, then she, use. The B words include: lucky, stuck, thud, buddy, stuff, ladybug, yuck, thumb, eat, find.

Don't forget Spirit Week! Crazy sock day is on Monday. Mismatch day is on Tuesday. Wednesday is the 70's era. Thursday is hillbilly day. Friday is nerd day!

Your child has lined paper in the Friday folders to write about their favorite place, examples could be a favorite restaurant, room in the house, vacation, etc. They need to include a "juicy word" and at least two "feeling words". The assignment is due on Monday.

Spelling Words for October 8

The first graders are passing their spelling tests! It is important that they learn to use the spelling words in every day writing opposed to only learning the words to pass the Friday test. Continue to review or drill the past spelling lists. Challenge your child to spell difficult words as they love to say hard words.

This week's focus covers the "th" digraph. The A words are: then, them, this, that, path, with, men, set, was, said. The B words are: they, these, those, thing, both, math, teeth, are, came, come

Just for fun, why don't you ask your child to drill your spelling ability!
