The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins
by Walter Dean Meyers

This is such a great book! This is the second time I've read a book by Walter Dean Myers. He tells stories about real soldier’s lives. This book is great because it tells a lot of information about Scott Pendelton Collins who was a soldier in World War II.

Scott wanted to be a soldier in World War II because his dad and his great-grandfather had fought in wars. His dad fought in World War I. His great-grandfather fought in the Civil War. The family had pictures in frames of everyone in their family who fought in wars. At the end of the story, Scott’s son gets his picture in a frame. In 1968, Scott’s son got killed in Vietnam when his plane blew up.

My favorite part of the book was when Angie sent a picture of herself to Scott. She barely knew Scott when she sent him the picture. Angie wrote, “Dear Scotty, would this sound too stupid if I said I love you?" It is my favorite part because it is humorous. It is humorous because she barely even knows Scott but she is telling him she loves him. I also liked the way the author described the action scenes.

The message of this book is the story about Scott as a soldier in World War II. The author wanted to tell us what life was like as a soldier during a war. Walter Dean Myers writes interesting stories about what a soldier must live through during war. I think the author wants the reader to understand what a soldier’s life can be like in a war. He also wants us to know his thankfulness for the soldier’s work.
