The book Silent Thunder is written by Andrea Davis Pinkney. Andera Pinkney is an African American. She wrote this story because of her interests in her family history. This story takes place during the civil war in the early 1860's. I would recommend this book to any one!
The book Silent Thunder is about slaves on a plantation owned by Gideon Parnell. Summer is a little girl on Parnell's Plantation with an older brother named Rosco and their mother Kit. Back then the slaves could not be aloud to read or know letters but Rosco taught himself anyway. Soon he taught Summer some of the letters and she also taught her self to read. Later on one good Sunday, Gideon Parnell had a stroke he got very weak and could not talk well. Kit got mad at Summer for learning how to read because she didn't want Summer to get sold, whipped, or both so she took away the book that Rosco had stolen from Master Gideon's son, Lowell! Soon after Rosco and Clem, another slave, ran off and followed the Diamond Eye (North Star) to freedom!
I liked this book because it gives a lot of info about the slaves in the civil war. I learned that the slaves got barely any attention! I also like it because it tells how the slaves lived. I think that this book is very interesting! I would recommend this book to anyone!I think that this book is trying to tell us that the slaves were very brave to the heart. It also tells that blacks can do everything that white people can do. The book shows also what it was like for people during the civil war. It tells how hard it was for the back people back before Dr. Martin Luther King. If you like the genre historical fiction this is the right book for you!
