The Witch of Blackbird Pond
by Elizabeth George Speare

I read the book The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. This book is great for both boys and girls because it there is both excitement and a little bit of romance. In some parts of the book you want to yell at Kit because she's as blind as a bat! That's what makes it an exciting book.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond is about a young woman named Kit, who was raised by her wealthy grandfather. Just when she thinks nothing could ruin her life, her grandfather dies. She travels by ship to New England where her only living relatives live. On the ship she meets a young sailer named Nat. Though she does not know it, she 'll become great friends with this young voyager. She learns to adapt to her new life, while coming to know the old lady that some call a witch. Later Kit is accused of being a witch herself. Will Kit live to see tomorrow or will she have the same fate as the others accused of being a witch?

I adore this book. The descriptions are so good, it is as if you are seeing the things Kit's seeing. Another reason why I like this book is because it tells history facts in a fictional way. I also like how the book is a mystery. Hannah, the witch, is very mysterious in her actions. You don't know until the end if she's evil or not.

The theme of the book is that you shouldn't judge people before you get to know them. An example is Hannah is judged by the people of the town because of the mark on her forehead. Kit is also judged because she can swim and because she wears fancy clothes. Kit herself judges her relatives by what they wear and their lifestyle. I learned not to judge people who are different than me before I get to know them.
