Almost Done with Autobiographies

Unexpected, fun, thrilling, those are just a few descriptions to describe our day because it was a Wednesday! We had Newsbowl, gymsic, art, (my personal favorite!) and now we are almost done with our final drafts for our autobiographies!

First to check off the list was we cleaned out our totes. If we showed Ms.Sanborn our totes after we cleaned them on time we got a ticket. If we didn't, we owed her a ticket. I admit we did sort of dawdle around at first, but then we got straight down to business.

In math we only checked the study guide and then immediately switched over to spelling. The class took two pretests. The "better spellers" took a harder test first. Then the rest of the class took an easier test. Then we wrote our personal lists.

As we all lined up for gymsic, all I could really hear was talking, in fact that was the only thing I heard, we were really chatty today! As soon as we entered the gym we noticed the big poles with strings hanging down. We each grabbed a ribbon and we listened to the gym instructor so we either we could go over or under the next person while holding the ribbon. In a way it was just like ring around the rosie, but actually it was a May Pole.

When we got back into the classroom we knew that we had art. We were shown a slide show on Paul Klee (the artist of the week) by our fabulous teacher. Then we did a few sketches so we got an idea of Paul Klee's wacky style and his crazy titles. Each of the students was given a piece of burlap to work their imaginations and to paint on.

“O.K., class, line up so we can go to the computer lab.” Ms Sanborn said. It was time for math, again! When we were at the computer lab we did a program called “Larson's Math”. Then when it was 12:50 we went back to the classroom, filled out our assignment notebooks, and went to eat lunch. Some people were lucky enough to enjoy the last Potluck of the year for No late assignments. Boy, were they lucky.

When we were dismissed there was only one word to say... RECESS! Which only meant one thing afterward... NEWSBOWL!

In Newsbowl, we battled it out until 2:00 and then answered four team written questions then walked out the door.
That ended our busy, but fun Wednesday.

Suckers for Everyone, 4-3, by Reanna

Suckers For Everyone!

Today started out like any ordinary day, but with a few surprises. One, it was Erin's birthday so that meant extra snack, music at 2:30 instead of 10:55, and Ms. Noble announced what movie we were going to watch for a party in music, so keep reading to find out more about these few things and the rest of the day.

First, in math we checked math boxes and links. I checked Rachel's math box and Kaleb's link. We all did pretty well, but we could’ve done better. Since our test is on Friday, we highlighted some things in our journal to study. Also to help us study, we had a study guide to practice the skills that are going to be on the math test.

Next was hand-aching, writing. First, we read some of our “zoo stories”that we wrote yesterday in our writing. We had to write about something unusual that you imagined happening. We also took some notes on dialogues and did a page in our language arts book. During that time got suckers and sang to Erin because it was her birthday.

Normally after writing we have music, but not today. Our normal time is at 10:55, but we were going to the computer lab so we had to do it later. You will find out what time later.

Instead of music, we had reading. We started by Ms. Sanborn reading two chapters from A Week in the Woods. A good teacher read book. Then we read the story “Little by Little.” It was about a girl who has trouble reading and she is in the fifth grade. Everybody makes fun of her because of that. After we read the story, we had to write a summary and answer four questions, but it’s not due until Thursday.

For the rest of the year we are going to have something new to do at noon everyday. Can you guess it? It’s keyboarding! I didn’t think you could guess it anyway. We have that for thirty minutes. Mr. Vincent is teaching us how to type better and some helpful hints.

After editing and the weekly spelling test it was LUNCH TIME! Everybody was so excited because they got to be with their friends and eat. After all that chaos, we went outside to have recess. What a fun way to spend school, only if we could do that all day!

As we got into the classroom, we grabbed our books off our desks and sat anywhere with anyone. We only read 15 minutes, but that was enough for us.

When SSR was over, we checked a few sound worksheets. I had Andrew's. We didn’t do the best and we could have done A LOT better! Today was one of those days where we had to take a science quiz. It was over lesson 2. I thought it was pretty easy, but you never know. We also watched a funny Bill Nye the Science Guy video about sound.

Again with the music, O.K, now we had music and it was at 2:30. In music, we did Garage Band, and we voted on which movie we were going to watch for our Pajama party we had earned for good behavior in music class. It turned out it was Shrek 2. Oh well, it is still a pretty good movie. We are watching it on Friday the thirteenth.

We started study hall at 3 o’clock by filling out our assignment book. We did that in a snap then got right to work.

We stopped at 3:25, and crossed off and circled. Everyone was excited to get out the door to get a ride home and then sit and do anything, but of course I had to wait at least ten minutes before I could sit around because I had to walk home!

So our day of lollipops, Garage Band, and a new schedule wasn’t so bad.

Tiring Monday, 5-2, by Cydney

Tiring Monday
Today was a great day because we were given a new seating arrangement, started a keyboarding unit, and ran the mile in gym class.

As everyone worked on their morning assignment I followed Ms. Sanborn around the room as she gave tickets to those who had their Friday folders, assignment books, and Math journals signed by a parent. I picked up our Friday folders and put them away. Our morning assignment was to write two goals and explain how you were going to achieve them, the title, and the author of the book you are reading, all in the assignment book. Also in the morning Ms. Sanborn called out our names for a ticket if we brought in our April reading calendars, read 600 minutes, and had a parent's signature.

In math we checked two links about the volume of shapes and checked a Math Box with problems like finding what a letter means here is an example 76-t=35
Then we would write t=21. We also talked about the Metric system, liters, and mililiters. Then we got assigned a Math Box with problems like finding the decimal and percent of a fraction. All of us were very glad it was our last Math Box for lesson nine and that our big test is Friday.

Next was writing and Ms. Sanborn shouted, ''Get out our writing journals!''
So we all did and opened up to a fresh new page. Then Ms. Sanborn explained what our assignment was it was to write about a zoo adventure and it had to be at least 3/4 of a page long. After about fifteen minutes we had to take out our Language books and do pages 242 and 243. They were about practicing which word to use like there, their, and they're. When we were done we just had to read or do something quietly.

''Ohhhh!'' everyone said as we lined up to go to gym because we had to run the mile. We trudged outside because nobody wanted to run the mile. Everyone was glad that some of Mrs. French's students were still running so we had some time to prepare to run. When Mrs. Lindeman said the names of people who were running first. Everyone who wasn’t called first was happy and I was one of them. Most of the kids who didn't have to run played dodge ball. After everyone ran we went inside all fatigued.

YES!! YES!! YES!! It was finally time to rearrange our desks because it was the first day of the month!
''Andrew, you're here Madison, you're here,'' Ms. Sanborn commanded as she told us where we were going to sit in our new partner arrangement.

Then it was time to for reading. In reading we predicted and then read a pink packet about the Father of the Constitution, who is James Madison. Also in reading we looked up the vocabulary for this week’s story “Little By Little.”

At noon Mr. Vincent came in to do a keyboarding lesson, but I only stayed for about fifteen minutes because I had a Chorus concert at Lakeside at 12:45 and since fifth grade usually eats at 12:55, we had to eat early. For lunch it was cheese pizza and a hot dog. Then we had to go in the music room to practice our songs one more time. After a little while we got on the bus and headed for Lakeside. It only seemed like five minutes and then we were back at school. The concert went well.

Finally back at school we only had one more subject to go and it was Science. In Science we went over Lesson 2 and then by ourselves we had to do three questions out of our books and once we got them all correct we got to do a green worksheet front and back. When most of us were done we had a Sound and Light Quizzler competition to see who could get the best score and Ben won. Great job!!

Time for teacher read. In teacher read we are reading a book called A Week In The Woods. It is about a kid named Mark and he moves to a new state and has to spend a week in the woods with the entire fifth grade. He is not a happy kid.

It was finally study hall and most of them talked, but I tried to finish my work because I had to write this Blog.
''Cross off and circle!'' shouted Ms. Sanborn.

We all walked out of the classroom happily because the first day of the week was officially over!

Substitute, 4-29, by Erin

Substitute

Most of the students in my class and I knew that we were going to have a substitute, but we didn't care because it was Friday. The substitute was Micah's mom. Except for Micah's mom being our substitute and today being a Friday, we had a pretty normal day. We had a reading test, Time for Kids, and we still had math.

Math, like always was our first subject today. We first switched our journals and graded page 331, and then we did two pages about the volume of prisms. It was a little hard to understand. After we were done we were assigned a Math Box that needs to be signed by our moms and dads this weekend.

Next was writing. We first sat in front of the couch and read our third quarter stories. I wanted to read mine, but we didn't have enough time, because we still had to do some pages in the small green language books that we have. As soon as we were done with those pages we had to work on the autobiographies that we are working on about ourselves. We had a lot work to do in writing, but we managed,

Your music classes might be boring, but most of ours are always fun. Today we first talked about the party that we get to have for being good. Then we sang songs. One was called “The Wacky Boogie.”

After singing silly songs and talking about parties we had reading. Like a usual Friday, we took our reading test. When we were finished with the test, we had to read until the rest of the class was also done. I missed the rest of reading because I had orchestra, (I play the cello.) but that is okay. They read Time for Kids with a partner and then worked on their sheet.

As soon as I got back from orchestra we had spelling and editing. We started by editing the last sentence in our editing books. Once we were done with that we had to take a spelling test on our Palms with something called Spell it. Last, but not least we studied (for real this time) with a partner. I was with Madison.

Yea! It was finally lunchtime! I had a grilled cheese sandwich. It was delicious! When I was done with lunch we went outside for recess.

After we came in from recess and read silently, we had science. In science we are learning about sound and light. We read some pages and then copied some notes about Lesson two. Bleh!

After that we had teacher read. We are reading the book A Week in the Woods and so far it's a good book. Their classes spend an entire week as a class in the woods. I don’t know if I would like that.

Next it was the time for me to finish some of the homework that I was assigned today and that meant study hall. Though I had gotten some work done in study hall I still had more to do at home, but that's why they call it homework. The good thing is that I have all weekend to do it.

Even though Ms. Sanborn wasn’t here it didn’t seem too different. We still had our usual reading test, Time for Kids, and all the other usual subjects we do, just today we did them with Mrs. Stoddard.

Ah, A New Math Lesson, 4-28, by Aaron

Ahh, A New Math Lesson
The William Joyce Scrapbook is the book we reread, Backboard is the game we played and today we also read some of our third quarter stories we wrote.

During super math we checked page 321. It was a Math Box. There was a circle graph, fractions, and some math equations. We also had a new lesson with the area of a rectangular prism. We learned when we label, instead of centimeter squared it is centimeter cubed. Next we moved onto writing as fast as jets.

Ms. Sanborn shouted for everyone to go over to the couch. During that time we started reading and sharing our third quarter stories. After that we watched Grammar Rock. We also talked about synonyms and antonyms. Once we were done talking we had to line up for P.E.

When we got to P.E. we had choices of Kickball or Backboard. The results were Kickball zero and Backboard twenty-four. During the three games of Backboard one team won two games and my team won one. That's when we had to walk around the gym once. Once we walked around the gym we had to line up and go to our knowledgeable classroom.

When we got back to the classroom we had to get out our green books and review William Joyce Scrapbook. During that time I had to go to band. I play the trumpet. The rest of the class had to do reading sheets.

Furthermore we had to edit two sentences and then start Spell it. Spell it is when you type the word in after it gives you a clue or definition.

Finally it was lunchtime and I was starving like a pig that hasn't eaten in a whole day. Once we got back from recess we had SSR or silent sustained reading. I was reading the book City of Ember. It's about a city that doesn't have any light. But a class picks out of a bag for jobs. If you want to find out what happens you might want to read the excellent book.

In science we are learning about Sound and Light and I'll tell you what were learning about. We started of with questions from our notes and that lead to a pre-quiz over the notes. Once we were done we had to study science with a buddy which Ms. Sanborn calls “buddy study.” When we had put everything away we had to go over to the couch for teacher read.

Today we had to pick a new book. We picked A Week in the Woods. The part we read about is when the whole fifth grade class prepares to go out in the woods for a week. As Ms. Sanborn exclaimed "Dunt, done, Dun!"

We went back to our seats and filled out our assignment books and tried to finish any work. We got our links, but I had to go because of Safety Patrol. We cleaned our desks because we had visitors coming for an adult Palm class. I was going to be one of the mentors tonight for the class. Kids actually teaching adults that’s amazing. I thought we learned from adults.

To conclude the day, we reviewed sound and light, learned about volume, and got to play Backboard. All in all we had a great day.
