BBBOOMM went the feet of everyone as they ran through the doors into the halls after a four day weekend. We started the day with a pink sheet called Explore Galore. 9:00 and time for math. We started math by going over the math test from the previous Wednesday. Three people got 100%. A few people got A's. Next, we started to do two new pages of unit five in our math journals. Our assignment was Math Box page125. Next it was time for writing. We all took out our writing journals and wrote on what we did over the four day weekend. Then we all took out our language books and learned about nouns, common and proper. Hooray! We got to watch a movie called Grammar Rock! We only saw the part about nouns though. Time to line up for gym. When our class got there we picked a partner. I was with Alex. We all had to dribble a basketball across the room and pass. Then we played a game where there where there were two teams; one red the other blue. We had to run to the other side of the gym to get a basketball, but if you got tagged you have to go to jail. The red team won three times in a row. When we got back from gym we started reading. We previewed, predicted, and practiced the vocabulary for our new story Woodsong. I can’t wait to read it tomorrow. After reading we all got a word from the word master list and made a huge flash card to help everyone in the class study. We drew pictures, wrote the definition, and wrote a sentence. Finally it was lunchtime, I’m glad there wasn’t any turkey, that’s all I’ve eaten lately. After recess we had library time. 1:45 and it was time for science. We started a unit on energy. We had to write 5 questions and 5 predictions and look through our new books. We even read the first few pages. Then we had teacher read. We read the part in the story about Ruscurro the rat who accidentally killed the queen. At 3 pm we all had studyhall and then 5-4-3-2- 1.... BBRRIINNGGG!! We all left school feeling good for what we have learned.
Today every student came into the classroom and read the board. We took out our paper and began writing a letters to thank Brian, our Junior Achievement volunteer. That was our A.M. assignment. Writing was so awesome today because we wrote a story about a turkey. We are going to share them tomorrow morning with the class. When we time was up we went out to the Outdoor Learning Environment to learn about the new weather tools. That was pretty fun but cold. That was only for about ten minutes. Next, it was finally time for gym. Today we played basketball as usual. We were split into two teams and began to play. My team won! Afterward reading came. We previewed then read two packets. Each was about history. We all finished them quickly and turned them in. They were pretty easy. Then we read silently while Ms. S met with the other reading group. Right before lunch we edited a few Thanksgiving sentences and defined a couple word master words. Only three left! Finally lunch came and everybody ate like crazy. It almost looked like they had been starved. In social studies we did an Explorer packet with three pages. One was a word scramble, one a word searches and one was a crossword. While the rest of the Explorer groups finished filming we used our lists of fall words to fill in a bingo board and worked on any work we needed to finish. Ms. Sanborn read aloud to us and then we finished study hall. Time went by quickly and soon it was time to go home. We packed up and headed home. Monday was finally over!
Wednesday, November 24 Wow! Everyone realized that it was Wednesday and the last school day until our four day weekend! For our morning assignment, we had to clean our tote trays and do two sheets; one was a word search, the other was where we had to circle the mistakes in a picture of people getting together for a Thanksgiving feast. Next we played bingo. Reanna, Rachel, Laura, Kaleb, Drew, and Devon won, but Drew won twice. Lucky duck! Next was reading. We had to read a worksheet and answer questions about Tom Pilgrim. He was a Pilgrim who was friends with the first Indians. It talked about how they celebrated Thanksgiving with them. It didn’t take me long. 9:40 and it was time for wonderful math. We had our Unit four test today. Hope everyone got an A+! After everyone finished, we had Gymsic. We did the Turkey Tango. We all got partners and listened to the directions in the music and danced, danced, danced. Finally art! Everyone gasped as we all remembered about art. For art, we all had to “dress” a turkey into a costume so it won't get eaten tomorrow. I disguised my turkey as a shopoholic. Laura did hers as Puss in Boots from Shrek 2. After about an hour, most of us shared our turkeys we dressed and the other turkeys we colored that stated what we were thankful for. Next we got into table groups of four to prepare for Newsbowl then headed off to lunch and recess. Today for lunch we had delicious cheeseburgers. At recess, I played with my friends and swung on our swing set. We all lined up jumping for joy that we got to go inside. It was freezing outside! Woohoo! Time for Newsbowl!! Newsbowl is a weekly Jeopardy type team game that we play where we “guess” the answers to current event questions. As everyone came in and took their seats, Ms. Sanborn drew sticks and chose teams. After 25 minutes of questions, my team had earned a total of 230 regular points and 300 bonus points, for a grand total of 530 points! We are pretty sure that we won. We’ll find out Monday! By then it was 2 o’clock so we all packed up, lined up, said our brief good-byes, and headed out for what we hoped would be a wonderful four-day weekend!
Tuesday November 23 Today as everyone trotted into the classroom with red cheeks and cold ears, all I could think about was just a couple more days until I will be sleeping in, watching the Thanksgiving Day parade, and getting a stomachache. This was going to be a fantastic day. First on the schedule was math. Today we corrected our study guide we did Monday. I saw some happy faces and some not so happy. Cydney got 100% on her study guide. Great job Cydney! We also did page 157 all about division. I hope everyone will study for the math test tomorrow! Next, we had writing. We shared our writing pieces we did yesterday. They had to be about a turkey, anything about a turkey. Some of them were really funny. Also, we had to write a four square on what we are thankful for. Most of us did family. We also wrote the final draft. Finally it was snack. Almost everyone had a delicious snack to munch on. I had cookies that I ate the icing out of. "Line up for music!" Ms. Sanborn said in her happy voice. We scrambled off to music. Today in music we talked about our party because our class was the only class that got the 500 music bucks!! I think we all agreed on a potluck. Micah also played the bass because we had a recital day in music. Erin played the cello and Devon played percussion. Reading was next. Today we had to write a book review on our favorite book. First we did a four square then proceeded onto the final draft. First grade and the gym are ready for the feast now Ms. Sanborn. " The secretary, Mrs. Levesque said on the intercom. “Yes!” This will be the highlight of my day! It was time for the first and fifth grade feast. Erin and I found our buddy Karoline and found our spots and took a seat. Finally we got our food. Karoline got so much food, it was like her stomach would burst. After the feast, we had a recess with our buddies. It was really cold outside! Erin, Karoline and I went on the tire swing. When I got off I could barely move because I was so dizzy. Finally the whistle blew. We ran so we could be first in line to go inside to warm up. Once we were all warm we heard Ms. Sanborn say, take out your bingo boards. "Yippee!" the super students shouted. Alex, Andrew, Reanna and I all won once. Devon won twice. Lucky duck! In units we finally ended our Explorer unit by writing a poem on what we learned throughout the unit of explorers. It was an acrostic poem. Meanwhile, once you finished your poem, we had work time. Lots of people got their homework done so they didn't have to spend their time doing it at home. Teacher read time! Poor Despearaux the mouse got put in the dungeon! My tooth came out so I missed a lot of the book, but I heard we were introduced to a new character, Ruscuro the rat! Studyhall! I worked on my Thanksgiving word search. I found lots of the hard words. Before I knew it, it was five minutes until 3:30. Finally it was 3:30 and the bell rang. Everyone shot through the doorway giving Ms. Sanborn a brief goodbye. I wonder what tomorrow will bring!?!
This day started as a muggy and foggy one. We have been studying about explorers and we did a morning worksheet about explorers. We then made nameplates for our assigned explorer. In math we checked page 116 and Math Boxes 4.5. Page 118 and Math Boxes 4.6 were assigned to us. Also, we did division problems on our dry erase boards. We then had music for specials today. In music we learned a new Thanksgiving song. Next, we had Junior Achievement while some of us went to orchestra class. Then we had lunch. Due to the weather, we had indoor recess. Some of us went into other classrooms. When recess was over, we had S.S.R. In S.S.R. we read books. Next we practiced our scripts for the explorer video and wax museum. Our buddies saw out wax museum and do did Miss Everts’ and Ms. French’s classes. We then saw Miss Everts’ wax museum. Later we did our video presentation of our explorers. Unfortunately, not all of our groups were able to present for their videos. The rest of the groups will get to do their video presentations on Monday. When the bell rang, everyone dashed out the door to have a great weekend.
It was Thursday and as the school day began all I could think about was one week from today I would be; as I am sure the rest of the class will be, enjoying a chance to sleep in. As I was smacked back into the here and now by the bbbllliiiinnnggg of the bell, I realized break was still a week away and we had a full educational day ahead of us. As many checked in, performed their daily morning routines, and slowly began to look up two more word masters words our day was off and running! By nine o'clock Micah, Alex, and Drew had slipped out to Mrs. Wischow's room for their lesson as we began with doing four division problems on our dry erase boards. With one week of Unit 4 to go, we discussed what our three choices of what to do with remainders were. I think more practice tonight on the link should be a great review. Writing seemed to creep up quickly today. At 10:10 we gathered around the couch to listened to many read their Explorer reports. It was fun to hear how everyone used a different twist . It was neat to use first person to make it seem or sound like we were the explorer. I guess that's what the trait Voice means. Talk about time flying by, after thirty minutes of listening to reports we were given the chance to purchase books at the book fair in the front lobby. Finally! It was hard to believe but it was time for PE. We haven't had PE for weeks due to musical practice so today's gym class is something we have all looked forward to, and it wasn't a disappointment. Not a sweatlesshead left in the bunch. 11:30 came fast, that means Junior Achievement! Brian was back again loaded with a video about CD production. Later we put together pens by both the unit and mass production forms. Believe it or not mass production excelled. In two minutes they were able to make over twelve pens. It was a fun way to learn about production and business. Tomorrow we are develping our own businesses and products. Donald Trump here we come! Afterward we put our desks back and edited both sentence four and five. Hopefully everyone checked over their work which would help us achieve our goal of not having to editing anymore! Since there isn't spelling this week we spent the extra time before lunch working on our still life art pieces we started yesterday. Though the turkey and mashed potato aroma teased many of us to think that maybe today was Thanksgiving after walking through the lunch line we learned the "cafetria Thanksgiving lunch just doesn't compare to mom's traditional spread with all the fixins! Valiant effort though ladies. Due to the second day of rain we had to enjoy recess indoors. So when time was up we cleaned up and silently read for fifteen minutes. During Units time today we spent it looking at photos of last year's students dressed as explorers to get ideas for our costumes for tomorrow as well as preparing our scripts and groups for the filming of our portion of the I movie we are taping tomorrow. Poor Desperaux, during teacher read in the story little Desperaux was sentenced to the dungeon with the rats, because he just can't seem to follow the strict mouse rules because he's in love. As usual and without the interruption of a fire drill, we worked hard to get our work done so we would all have more time to catch The Apprentice, Survivor, or simply spend time with the family tonight. Thursdays we usually encounter the slothlike exits for the day, but not today! Finally we were all on the ball and headed out early to beat the rush of book fair purchasers and umbrella people! Bring on one more day this week!
As usual you would think we just dragged our backpacks into the classroom, but not today. Today was Wednesday the greatest day of the week. Next it was time to do our A.M. assignment, but since it was Wednesday, we had to clean our totes. Which I noticed that lots of people's totes are messy. Soon it was time to pick up everybody's art. We checked over it one more time to make sure it was great. Then we finally turned in our art. Next it was time to meet with our groups. We were trying to make reality T.V. shows. They were supposed to be about explorers from the past. Afterwards it was time to do editing. Some people did not have to do it but that was because they got 100% the week before. Then it was time to go to Gymsic. Today we had an unusual Gymsic class. We had all three fifth grade classes in the gym. We also watched a movie, well not much of a movie, but it was of our musical. Later on it was time to check math. It wasn't much. All we did was check two pages. After that it was time to read some of our blog entries. Too bad only three of the kids got to share theirs. Although only three people got to share, they were pretty interesting to read. Eventually we got to do art. Which was my favorite subject. We had to do a still life. It was pretty hard. Pretty soon we started Junior Achievement. We learned about getting jobs. Ms. Sanborn got to interview the Junior Achievement teacher. Then it was lunch and recess. At lunch everybody was chatting. Of course we were also eating. When it was time for recess, everyone scampered through the doors to their classroom because it was indoor recess. Everyone played something different but everybody had fun. In addition it was time to have study hall. The teacher met with reading groups while the other people worked. After working we got to leave. Everybody was happy the day was over.
Today everybody came bouncing in excited it was the day of the fifth grade musical. We had been practicing for more than three weeks! The first subject was math. In math we checked our math sheets. Then we traded math journals and checked those too. Then we had to do a measuring page and Math Boxes. Some students are lucky because they got to go to sixth grade math. Guess what? We didn't have reading today! Next up was writing. In writing we got into groups of four. In that group we had to make a show about the explorers we had been learning about. Then it was music! In music we decorated the stage for our fifth grade musical titled ''Star Search''. After that a businessman named Brian came to our class for Junior achievement. Junior achievement is where a businessperson comes and teaches us about economics. Mmmm! Next was lunch. Everybody loves lunch because you get to eat and talk to your friends. After lunch we had recess and it seemed that recess was really long today. Almost the whole fifth grade rushed into the music room to get ready for our musical. Our musical turned out to be fabulous. Ms. Sanborn's mom read to us at teacher read because she came to our musical to watch. She even stayed the rest of the day. Finally it was study hall. Study hall seemed more quiet today and a lot of people got more work done. Finally, everybody scrambled out of the classroom glad that Tuesday was over.
Today, unusually, there was nothing unusual in Ms. Sanborn's classroom. Everyone bounced in, ready for a new week at school. If they were not eager, students were glum. Reasons to be down included we had lost snack until January, students had forgotten an assignment, or they were just not morning people. Everyone geared up for math, a subject in which everyone learned something new each day After we were done with math, we did a free write in our writing journals. There were some pretty wild topics. One I heard of was "Attack of the Kindergarteners." Pretty crazy huh? Today instead of P.E., we had musical practice for the upcoming play called "Star Search". "Star Search" is about a time when the Sun takes a vacation to the Andromeda galaxy, and the planets and moons of the Solar System look for them. Today we earned 100 music bucks each. Music bucks is money that if you get 500 dollars each, you get a party. Today our class got over the total 500 dollars! For reading, today instead of using the green anthologies, we got new thin little books and answered questions in the back. We buddy studied today in spelling. Also Andrew, Dylan, and I got to rip up the page of editing that we do this week. Finally, it was time for recess and lunch! For lunch, we had a pizza stick, peas, and peaches or an apple. When we came back, Ms. Sanborn and the class listed ideas on how to make our "Explorer Wax Museum" speeches better. Today for Teacher Read, we started a book called The Tale of Despereaux. It is about a mouse named Despereaux who is in love with music, art, and a princess named Pea. After study hall, the bell rang, and everyone disappeared out the doors, and rapidly "shrunk" and became tiny specks in the distance.
Today is the best day of the week do you want to know why? It's finally Friday! The morning assignment was a work sheet half on explorers and the other half on division. As Ms. Sanborn announced that we should take out our Math Journals, we knew it was time to check our math pages! When everyone got their Math Journals back, there were a lot of unsatisfied faces because not a lot of people even got a 90 percent! After our time with Math was over it was time to take out our Writing Journals. We had a free write today. Next was scheduled Music, but since our fifth grade Musical was on Tuesday, the whole 5th grade had to practice! In that practice the meteors, asteroids, and comets learned their moves. I am a comet and our moves are really funny! When one hour was up it was time to go back to the classroom and do a Reading test. (Groan). Those questions were really hard! Finally it was time for Spelling, Editing and WordMasters! First we had to edit and rewrite the sentence in our Editing Booklets. Second, we had to define our word and put in our Palms. Third, only if we got done, we study our Spelling words until lunch. Now for the best subjects of the day: lunch and recess! For lunch today I had lunch from the cafeteria, and I guess it was okay. Outside at recess I played tag with my friends the whole time! When we got in it was time to edit and revise our first draft of our biography. We did that for about 30 minutes. Next it was time for the last part of the day: study hall. When that 25 minutes was up, we checked out and left school! I wonder what Monday has in store for us?
“Ah man, this is easy.” Ms. Sanborn handed out a paper that was about Vikings. It was two sided. On one side, we had to draw a fearsome looking figurehead that scared away monsters that explores thought lived in the ocean. On the other side was a word search where we had to find the names of famous explorers. Sadly, next we had math. We worked on long division again today. For me, it was a horrible experience to go through…numbers, signs, hard work, and then the headaches. Oh, the agony! Luckily, the school counselor came in. She divided us into groups. Each group had to come up with a group name. After 15 minutes of tossing back and forth ideas, and fighting about what to call our group, we finally came up with the name “The Simpsons.” After that, the members of Chorus left the classroom. The good news for Chorus is they got out of class for about two hours. They missed Art, Spelling and Social Studies. Something they missed was to re-read the story Ididarod Race and the worksheet about it. Another thing they missed was in Social Studies where we had to write an autobiography about an explorer that we’re pretending to be. The bad news is Chorus had to do these assignments as make-up work. After that, the entire 5th grade went to practice for our musical play, “Star Search.” We practiced for an hour. Finally, we’d gone through our program and it was time to go back to class. We had to fill out our assignment book and pack our backpacks to leave. The school day flew by. It was an average day, except for the musical practice and Chorus trip.
Today all the of kids’ voices echoed through the halls as the first bell rang. The school day started as the kids cleaned out their desks. Everyone had to show Miss Sanborn his or her desk and they would get a ticket. You can only get a ticket if you show Miss Sanborn your desk before 9:55. Next everyone took out there personal spelling book and they took the spelling pretest. Only one person got 100%. Then everyone lined up to go to Gymsic class where we practiced for our planet musica.l The rehearsal ended when the moons were done with their lines and song. Every class got 100 dollars for the practice. In music the classes who get 500 dollars earn a free day. After our class quietly walked through the hallways back to our comfortable classroom, we started art. We were making a map of the voyages of our early explorers of America. We each have our own explorer that we have to do a report on. Then yaaaaay! It was time for lunch! Everyone lined up and we left for the lunchroom. Many Willowdale Wildcats had a yummy cheeseburger and some corn. When we got back we played the Weekly News Bowl where we each take our desks and put them into groups of four. We could each get 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, or 80 points by answering questions. Finally we packed our bags and the bell echoed throughout the school.
Welcome to Tuesday November 9th, 2004. The first subject of the day was writing because we had to do a writing assessment. The assessment will go on for tomorrow. That is the whole part of the test because that is the final draft. That's also what we get graded on. In addition, we read Iditarod Dream with a partner, and after that we had to write ten facts about the book. After that was spelling time. We took our spelling personal test instead of a pretest. Our pretests are on Wednesdays. Editing was next. Three people didn't have to do editing because on the last sheet we got 100%. "Lunch time everybody!'' exclaimed Ms. Sanborn. “Yummy!” all the kids yelled out. The A choice was chicken nuggets. The B choice was a hot dog. Delicious! Study Hall time was next and is a work time when you can get the homework done in 30 minutes. When the 30 minutes is up, your work time is over, and you have to put all of your homework away. Next was the computer lab time. We were working to learn about our famous explorers that we drew out of a bucket with the explorers’ names in it. I drew Marco Polo. That was another of our successful days of our full school year at Willowdale Elementary.
Everybody trampled into the classroom tired because it was Monday morning. So we all started on our morning assignment. Math time! We started our next unit. It’s about division. We did three pages in our math journal. The first one was about friendly numbers. The second page was number problems and the last one Math Boxes. That was the end of math. Next, it was writing. We wrote down what we should do in a persuasive writing piece. We did that because we are having a writing test tomorrow. It was OK. After that, we had play practice. All the fifth graders went to the music room and sang the songs in our play. Our play is called Star Search. It’s about the planets. The practice was fun. The performance for the entire school is November 16, 2004. Later, we had reading. Some people talked about the new story we are reading, and then, Drew , Alex, and Micah, and me read a book called Hobbit. Next, we went to lunch. It was French toast sticks and a shaker salad. I had cold lunch. Then we went to recess. Later, we went to the library. We learned how to use the computer to find a book and we got to check out books. After that, we went to the computer lab. We went because we were researching about a specific explorer. I had Francisico Vasquez de Coronado. We did that for 45 minutes. STUDY HALL! Everybody did everything they needed to do that trudged out the door!
It was a warm Friday morning and everyone was running around like they did not care what was going on in their lives! We started out by checking in and doing our morning assignment, which was cleaning our desks’ tote trays. After that was challenging math! That day in math we started our new unit about division. It was a little tricky. We checked Math Boxes and we also did one! Hope I got 100! Writing was our next subject. I love writing! Today we had a free write were we could write anything we want. I wrote about my weekend. It was great! To add to the day was music. In music my class practiced for the fifth grade musical. Our musical is about the planets. It'll be awesome… I hope. Next was reading. To start out with we buddied up and read TFK. My partner was Aaron. Then we did a sheet about the TFK. That’s all in reading! Next on the list was spelling. In spelling I finished my spelling sentences. It took forever because I couldn’t think of a proper sentence for my difficult word! Second to last on the school list was social studies. In social studies our class studied first then took a quiz. Want to talk about hard? That’s what the quiz was! It was very, very hard! After that we watched a DVD by the past fifth graders from 2 years ago. Some of them were hilarious! The videos were interviews with famous explorers by Mr. Vincent’s class. Last on the list was silent study hall (Actually, Ms. Sanborn is the only one who calls it silent)! I had zip to do in silent study hall so I just read a fabulous book! There you have it! Ms. Sanborn’s Super Students walked into the door with a smile on their faces, knowing this is going to be a great day! To start out our day we had to grade Ms. Sanborn’s Roving Reporter article from yesterday. Everybody gave her a not very good grade. She had many misspelled words, and she forgot some words too. "Everyone get in test mode,” announced Ms. Sanborn. When everyone was in the spot that they were supposed to be, everyone took their shoes off like they do for every test. When we were done with our test, we had to do a page of Math Boxes. We also made a visit to Willowdale’s computer lab. Afterwards, we went to lunch early. Yes! I was happy because I was hungry. When we came in from recess we had a guest speaker about cells. We did an activity, that you have to work with someone and have to fill a paper out. By the end you will have a baby boy or girl. My group got a girl that was bold, with blue skin and my partner and I named ours Sally Walker. After that we went back to our classroom we partner studied, but if you signed the book in the past two days you couldn't do it with a partner. When we were done, we studied by ourselves. Finally, it’s study hall and we worked on anything that we haven't finished. Thirty minutes later Ms. Sanborn yells, "Cross off and circle what you haven't finished!" 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 R..I..N..G! We all rushed out the door to go to our nice warm homes!
Excitement was in the air as everyone entered the classroom because it was Election Day! After we checked in, we started our morning assignment. Willie checked everyone's assignment books for a parent's signature. Those who had a parent's signature received a ticket. Math was the first subject of the day. We passed our Unit 3 study guides to a buddy who checked them. Afterwards, questions could be asked. Since there was no math assignment, we got to study by ourselves. Yeah! The next subject of the day was writing. Yesterday, we had written 3 second quarter goals in our writing notebook. Today we had to copy the goals on the back of a decorated paper leaf. As a class, we reviewed a poor writing piece to find all the errors. Individually, we completed a 4 square writing piece, which was about whether or not 5th graders should receive their own handheld computers. After we finished writing, we had music class. Because people were voting in our lobby, we had to be extra quiet on our walk to the music room. Music class was really fun because we practiced four songs that will be in our fifth grade play! Our class earned 40 bucks towards our goal of 500 bucks before Christmas break! We returned to our classroom where Ms. Sanborn directed us to gather into our book groups. She met with each group to discuss the assignment that was given yesterday. When each group finished their discussion, they were allowed to have free time. After all groups were finished, it was time for editing. A few students got skip editing for the week because they earned 100% on last week's editing assignment. Way to go! The rest of the students had to edit today's sentence and write it correctly. Next, we studied word masters. We could study with a partner if we hadn't received a late assignment in the past two days. Finally, it was time for lunch! Most of us ordered the hot lunch which was a hot dog, carrots, tater tots, orange slices and a roll. Everyone gobbled down their food so we could go outside for recess. Boy, it was cold outside and we were ready to go back in! After entering the classroom, it was time for individual silent reading. Many students were reading Golden Sower books. As silent reading ended, we lined up to go to the lobby to vote! Many of us were so excited to participate in such an important event! Presidential elections only happen once every four years. We voted for President, House of Representative for Nebraska, and the Casino issues. There was a skip in our walk as we returned to the classroom. Yeah! It was finally time for the last subject of the day. During social studies, we reviewed pages 154-159 in our social studies book. Then we took notes for those pages. Afterwards, we had free time during study hall. Most students worked on the essay that was given in writing class. Suddenly, the afternoon announcements came over the loud speaker. We crossed off and circled finished or due assignments in our assignment books. Ms. Sanborn signed us out and the day was done!
This morning, as kids swarmed into the classroom, they began working on their A.M. assignment. Once everyone finished that they took out their math journals, switched them with a friend, and then checked them. Everyone got a fair grade. After we finished checking it was FINALLY time for gym! Everyone lined up exited to see what we were going to do today. As we got down we saw that today we were playing basketball. It wasn't the best thing to do. When we arrived back in class we took a social studies quiz. But not before studying! We all grabbed a partner and began to fill our minds with yet more facts. We all went to lunch and then recess. During lunch an announcement blared over the speakers, “Indoor recess!” After recess, we spent 15 minutes at the library. After we got back we took out our handheld computers and reviewed our WordMaster words. It felt like time just slipped away because all of a sudden it was 3:00! We all took out our homework to try to finish before school was out. As the P.M. announcements came on, we all packed up from study hall. We all left anxious to get home to finish off our Halloween candy!
The biggest question that was being asked as the Super Students rushed into the room was "What are you going to be for Halloween?" But most of the comments were shot towards Ms. Sanborn. She had dressed up as Wonder Woman! Since it was the day of the Halloween Party, the morning assignment was two yellow worksheets about Halloween. I thought they were pretty easy. It was Friday, so I went down to the library to work on my sixth grade math. The pages I worked on were about multiplying fractions, and area of polygons. We also had two work sheets about multiplying fractions. Next was writing, one of my favorite subjects. We brainstormed some ideas for our Halloween persuasive essays. After 20 minutes of writing, we lined up for music. Ms. Sanborn led us down the hall to Ms. Noble's music class. In music we had a birthday party for the months composer, Howard Hanson. He was born in Wahoo, Nebraska. I brought bags of cookies to snack on. After finishing the delicious cookies, Ms. Noble said we were going to work on our musical. Reading was next. Everybody except for Alex, Micah, Reanna, and I took a test about the story they read during the week. We got a head start on the Time for Kids worksheet. I also worked on the ghosts we were going to give our buddies. They were made out of dum-dums, Kleenex, and string. After reading, our first grade buddies came down to our classroom. I gave my buddy Derek the ghosts, and he gave me gum and a Kit-Kat. We painted Halloween shapes the last time we met and this time we put magnets on them. Next, we played Bingo. After first grade left our room, we played more Bingo. I won once. Everybody was mad at Andrew because he won three times. For lunch we whooshed down to the cafeteria and had a pizza party. The pizza was from Old Chicago. It was way better than the school lunches! We were excused to go out for recess at 1:15. When we came back in from recess at 1:30, there were already some parents there for the party. We finished our paper windsocks. We put one down by the door to go to Lakeside Retirement Home and left one on our desks to take home. And now, the moment you all have been waiting for! Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, the Halloween party! Two by two, Ms. Sanborn excused us to go get our costumes. After everyone was ready and in the empty room, we took pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. Next came the parade through the hallways. After going through all of the grades' hallways, we walked happily back to the classroom. Instead of a classroom party, we had a fifth grade Halloween party. The games that we played were the mummy, where your teammates wrap you up in toilet paper. My team won. Next was the spooky Halloween word search. I got third place. After that we did the ring toss. I didn't win. Soon after that we went to the guessing jars. You'll find out if I won in a second. My favorite race was the three-legged race. I paired up with Kyle. Our team won the most. The toughest and last game we played was where you got a partner (mine was Kyle) and you hooked back to back and tried to get up while balancing a pumpkin on your back. That was the end of the 2004 Halloween Party and it was lots of fun. Finally, the end of probably the craziest day this year, and maybe ever! As the 3:30 bell rung, Sanborn's Super Students trotted out the classroom and into another fun-filled weekend.
