It was finally Friday, and it was going to be a great day because we had talented Russell Middle School musicians coming, including my brother. Today was also the last day of spirit week, so everyone wore their favorite hat. Some were crazy and some were just baseball hats. Today in sixth grade math wasn't normal because Ms. Wischow was there. Why is that unusual? Usually, we work in the library because Ms. Wischow is gone. Oh, boy. A regular boring math class. Today we had a sheet with problems from a previous Math Olympiad contest. Those problems were tough! I got 100% though. After checking the problems, we worked on algebra sheets. For example. 4x-3=2+7. What number does x represent? For those of you who can't figure it out, it remains a mystery. I was confused when I walked back into the classroom at 10:25 that fifth grade was still doing math! Oh well, at least I didn't miss writing. In writing we wrote one page in our journals about something that happened to my family. I wrote about when my brother, Evan broke his arm. Man, my brother is really popular today, isn't he? Everyone thought it was going to be plain old music class, but we were wrong. We got to sit wherever we wanted, watched a James Taylor Concert, and we got to lie down! So much for regular music class. My favorite song James Taylor sang was You've Got a Friend. No, not the song from Toy Story. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm proud to announce that I, Drew did not have to take the reading test! Doesn’t it seem like I always get Blog on Fridays? I got to sit on the couch and so did Andrew, Ben, Alex, Reanna, and Micah because we are in Classics. The story we were discussing was Riddles in the Dark, which is a snippet of The Hobbit. We also had small groups for a story. We had to answer questions about the story, and write a summary. Since it is nearing Easter, our class made cards for our first grade buddies. I got chocolate and jelly beans from my buddy, Derek. Today for spelling, we got beamed a new application called Spell It on our Palms. You are supposed to type your spelling word, look up the definition, and type the definition under the word. We did this until lunch. I had cold lunch today, but I don't even know, or remember what was for lunch. It was raining outside so we had recess inside. Some kids played games, and some just stood around and talked. After the inside recess, we had SSR. In which once again, I don't know what it stands for. I'm reading Artemis Fowl, which is about a young criminal mastermind who captures a fairy and wants to get the gold the fairies are hiding. It was finally time for the Russell musicians to perform for us. The orchestra "Fiddle Fire" was good and the swing choir and jazz band were fantastic. My favorite part of the concert was when the jazz band played the song "Area 51" I still have the song stuck in my head. After the concert we gave our first grade buddies the cards that we had made. Yesterday we cut a piece of construction paper, and today we finished by weaving strips of watercolor paper we painted on Wednesday. It was time for study hall, which meant get all our work done so we don't have homework. I have homework though, because I had to go to safety patrol in the freezing rain. At least we got popcorn for a week of patrolling. Today was a crazy day, with the program, art, and making buddy cards. All in all, I think today was a great day, and a great finish to a fantastic week.
Yeah, it is Wednesday and Mish/Mash dress day. It is the shortest day of the week. Today we started the day with art. Today we experimented with watercolors. Everyone except Madison, Ben, and I cleaned up. We then took our weekly spelling pretest. It was gymsic next. We did a dance that kids got to choose what we do. Next we did art. We had to color our 3-D pencil city. Afterwards we did math. We did a worksheet. After we did that we did Larson’s Math. I didn't do a lot of it because I had flutes. At lunch we had burritos and crispitos. Then we went out to recess. The last thing was Newsbowl. After we got signed out, we got a ride or walked home.
Tremendous Tuesday Tuesday is always tremendous because it comes right after boring Mondays. Tuesdays give you the chance to get use to school after the weekend. Anyway, Tuesday started out with a morning assignment. It was about Easter, and you had to find the right color for the underlined words that were a different part of speech. Just to tell you math was next. In math we checked our links and I got minus three. Pretty good I guess. Next in this devilish subject we checked our Math Boxes. I was in speech when we did that though. I that box was there were questions about connecting points and a shape you made out of them. We also did pages 274, 275, and 273 about multiplying fractions. It was a piece of chocolate cake with whipped cream! YUM! Uhhh onto writing. Next was writing. Writing is awesome! Well in writing we shared stories about our spring break. Some were about basketball tournaments, trips were not that rare, and more. Later we worked on our 3rd quarter stories. Everyone was illustrating and but were already done. Luckies. My story is about Freddy escaping. MUSIC OH YEAH! I usually don’t care for music, but today we did doing Garage band. Garage band is where you pick instruments off a program on the I Mac computers and make a beat. BUM, BUM, CHICKA, DUM, DUM, DUM, ICE, ICE, BABY! Reading was right behind music. We read a book called Hattie’s Birthday Box. It was strange and interesting. After that we went to the lab and went on a website called iKnowthat.com. It helped some people with math mostly for me, reading, science grrr, and more. I did math the most though. Science oh noooooo! Science is the devil's wife I swear! Never mind about that, in science we got in a group and did a poster about Causes of the Revolutionary War. My group did The Quartering Acts. In my group was Aaron, Madison, and Nicola. Finally teacher read, we finished reading Maxx Comedy. It was a great ending Max found out that he was on T.V., well kind of. Time for study hall! WAHOO! I had to finish my link, which I didn’t finish, but I finished my story illustrations and my A.M. assignment. We all lined up at the exiting and entering door then Ms. Sanborn signed us out. We all headed out the door to either go home or choir. All those activities and subjects are why Tuesday was so tremendous! SEE YA!
Free Day Today everyone wasn't at his or her brightest because everyone just got back, from spring break, even Ms.S.. So today everyone kind of got a free day. So to start of let me tell you about my favorite spontaneous subject, math. Today in math we checked pages 262 and 263. After that Ms.S commanded everyone to take out their dry-erase boards. She gave us some review questions because some people forgot what we were learning about. After that Ms.S assigned us pages 278 and 272, which were about multiplying fractions. "Everyone stop what you are doing and get out your writing journals,” Ms.S. exclaimed. During writing you guessed it, we had to write about what we did over Spring break. We wrote what we did over spring break for fifteen minutes. Next we had to work on our third quarter story. My story is called Hidden Temple Race. Can you guess what it is about? I would tell you, but you can find out yourself. "Clear off your desks." Ms.S. hummed. Finally a break in the day! We had P.E.! In P.E we played School. It's when you jump rope, but you start at kindergarten and go through college. So kindergarten you just have to run under the jump rope. In first you have to run in and jump rope once. (Etc.) Wow that was tiring. But it was time to go back to the exquisite classroom of ours for reading. In reading we didn't really read we did a language review. Once we were done we had to read our TFK (Time for Kids) alone. It was like being left home all alone. Wow we were going to the computer lab for reading that’s new! When we were in the computer lab we had to write five opinions about different blogs. "Everyone log out of Wildcats 5 and line up at the door." Ms.S snarled. “Put everything away and lineup at the door for lunch!” But I didn't get to go out for recess because I had band. After band I saw everyone coming back from the library so I went with them. Ms.S. wrote March 21st and WAR on the chalkboard. Then she wrote four questions. We had to answer and share them. When we were completed, she read books that I thought were going to be boring, but if you were sunny side up, they were okay. Teacher read time. We are reading Maxx Comedy and in this part of the book they had to make it to Chicago before 5 o' clock. Some crazy but funny stunts happened, but that would ruin the part of the book if I told you. Once we finished teacher read I shot like a bullet to the computer a sunk my third quarter story that I already told you about. When my pages were finished printing it was time to go home. As Ms.S signed us out the bell rang and a successful day was completed. Wow that was one of the better days of school for our class. Please read the next blog to see what happens.
Spring Break Here We Come! The only chatter I heard today was about the upcoming Spring break and the end of the day orchestra/band concert because Ms. Sanborn and Mrs. Kelly were playing in it. The only thing on my mind though was Spring break! For our morning assignment, we had to do two green sheets. The first one we had to do was about a leprechaun. It was one of those fill-in-the-blank worksheets. The second one was about if a leprechaun could grant you one wish what would it be and why. I wished for money so I could spend it anyway I wanted to. What would you wish for? For math, first we had to switch math journals and Cydney gave out the links. Then we did some adding and subtracting of mixed numbers on our dry erase boards. Then Ms. Sanborn assigned two pages of finding fractions for numbers and then a Math Box about the same thing. Writing came next. It is almost everyone's favorite subject except when our hands start to hurt. We read our leprechaun fill-in-the-blank stories. Mine was about a leprechaun named Billy Bob Joe. He gave a pot of gold to this girl named Carly. She spent it on clothes and shoes like almost every girl would. Everyone had a chance to share his or her leprechaun stories. Next, on our handhelds, we revised and worked on our 3rd quarter stories. "Line up for music!" Ms. Sanborn commanded. In music, we practiced "You Got A Friend" by Carole King. We practiced hard because we were going to sing it that afternoon to celebrate her birthday as a school. We also ate Hershey's Kisses that Drew brought for treats. After all the treats, we had to settle down for reading. We finished up our Reader's Theater, and discussed the books we read on Thursday. Next we read a new Time for Kids, a magazine for kids. We took out our green partner clocks and Ms. S. picked a time. After we got done reading with our partner, we had to do a sheet all about this week’s issue. In editing, we did the final sentence on the page called "Folk Tales From Asia". Hopefully, everyone got a 100% so we can all tear up our entire editing books next week! Once we finished our delicious lunches, we had SSR. I am reading Homecoming by Cynthia Voight. It is about a mom who abandons her children at a supermarket in her car. Dicey, the oldest, decides her mom is not coming back to they get out of the car and start to walk toward their Great Aunt Cilia's house. I can’t wait to see what happens if and when they get to her house. Finally, the great subject of science! We played the second edition of Who Wants to be a Winner? Alex was the lucky winner to go into the hot seat. Alex made it to about the seventh question and got five tickets, a pencil, and a pop from Ms. Sanborn. The highlight of the day was when we went into the gym and had the band and orchestra concert. Surprise, surprise! Ms. Sanborn and Mrs. Kelly were in the concert! Ms. S. played the maracas and cymbals and Mrs. Kelly played the trumpet. Talk about talent and neither have touched their instruments since high school. To remember how was incredible. They did pretty well and had a lot of fun. I give them an A+ for effort! After the fun with Mrs. Kelly, Ms. Sanborn, orchestra, and band was over, we sang "Happy Birthday" to Carole King and as a school, we also sang "You Got A Friend". Some got a little weepy. We did not eat birthday cake, but we did get other types of treats. Today was one of the best days of the year. You want to know why? Because we sang "Happy Birthday" to Carole King, Ms. Sanborn was in the band concert, and the coolest thing of all at 3:30 Spring break (a full week) began!
Almost Spring Break Today turned out to be a unique day because we were broadcasting our WillowWeb Radio Show, where I'm the host. Be sure to check out the WillowCast on Willowdale's web page at www.mpsomaha.org/willow. It was also a unique day because we're only two days away from Spring break. Through all of sixth grade math today we checked old Math Boxes and practiced pan-balance algebra. We will have a test over algebra when we come back from Spring break. During writing today we reviewed our third quarter stories. We revised them with a partner. My partner was Devon. His story is about a boy and a dog on a journey. My story is about a whole bunch of basketball players that are not very good. Now it was time for gym. We got a choice of playing hockey or playing Pin Guard. Everyone chose Pin Guard. To play Pin Guard you need five pins on each side of the court. We got split up into two teams, then we got a hockey stick and tried to hit a ball and knock down the pins on the other side of the court. My team lost twice and tied once. When we got back from gym, it was reading time. We broke into small groups and read short stories. When we got back to our desk we had to write a summary about that story. I read a story about baseball in Venezuela. It was a pretty good story because it explained how they played baseball in South America. It also explained how they're so obsessed with baseball there! Mrs. Anderson, the librarian came to our classroom and did book talks about biographies we could read. Right before lunch we had to edit number four in our editing books. If we all get 100% we get to rip up the books and if only a few of us get 100% we get to rip up the next page in our editing books. I have ripped up three pages. During lunch I had a barbeque pork sandwich. It was really good and flavorful. I swung on the swings during recess. It was so windy that I had to keep my eyes shut so I didn't get dust in them. It felt like a tornado! During science we added five more new facts to our KWL sheet. The five facts are about what I learned during this unit on Space. We also finished up sharing our Sketchys. There were some pretty cool ones. Next, we had counseling. We shared our skits with our class and the counselor. Our skits were about how to handle problems in a nice way. At the end of our day we had study hall. Most kids worked on the their one point perspective art projects, or else they revised their third quarter stories which are due tomorrow. That summarizes our windy Thursday at Willowdale Elementary. Read tomorrow’s Roving Reporter for more exciting news, and enjoy your Spring break if you get one.
Today is my favorite day of the week because we have art, Newsbowl, and it’s a short day. First we cleaned our totes and our boxes, which means we don't have a sheet in the morning! YAY! Then we all got out our Palms to share our Space Sketchys. Mine was about meteorites. Since it was so close to gymsic time Ms.S. gave everyone a Palm game to play. My Palm wasn't working so I got to use Ms.S’s Palm! (Wahoo!) Then it was time for the thing I dislike about Wednesdays; gymsic. In gymsic we skipped and danced to an Irish jig. Then the boys danced with the 4th grade girls while the girls were the exact opposite. After gymsic we had art time. We learned how to draw cities using a ruler and the vanishing point techinique we learned last week. Many of us drew different types of buildings. It was fun and hard. Next was math time. Some people went to Math Olympiad while we did problems on our dry erase boards, then we did a sheet on adding and subtracting fractions. When Math Olympiad came back we started editing sentence #3. I didn't have to do it because I got 100% on my last editing sheet. After we did that we looked, reread, and revised over our third quarter story. Now it was finally time for lunch! For lunch I had a sandwich and some other foods. At recess I played Knockout the whole time! When we came in it was time for Newsbowl! One of the hardest questions was: What college player scored a 20-20 last week? Do you know it? Finally it was time to check out of school and go home. I wonder what's tomorrow’s got in store for us? Sounds like a job for.....the next Roving Reporter!
A Pretty Cool Day Today we had some pretty cool things going on. We started a new project called “Garage band” on the computer in music class and we read a story, then did “Reader’s Theater” with it. The day started by Ms. Sanborn handing out our A.M. sheet. It was a sheet that told a story. We had to replace the bold faced verbs in the story with more descriptive verbs. I thought it was a pretty easy assignment, but there were a few words that kind of stumped me. After the A.M. sheet we had a long lesson about subtracting fractions where we had to use the borrowing method. Then we were assigned three pages in our math journal, where we had to practice subtracting fractions. We also were also assigned a link. Next, we had writing. We had to type our first draft for our end of the quarter story. Each student is writing a story about anything they want. The stories can be fictional or whatever we chose. Most have chosen to write horror stories, but I chose to do a historical fiction story. My favorite part of the day came next. Music. We went to the computer lab and got onto a program called “Garage Band” where we made up our own song by putting different instruments’ sounds together. Each person designed his or her own song. Most thought it was fun. My friend Kyle, who sat next to me, said, “I’ll let you listen to mine, then you can let me listen to yours.” We both thought the other’s piece was awesome. Our next activity was reading. Today we had “Reader’s Theater.” This is when a group of people act out the story or a scene after reading a small book or a section of a book. None of the groups could act out their book today because the sections they were reading were all informational and had no main characters. Two groups had information on the Everglades and one had information on hurricanes. After reading, we had spelling and editing. Unfortunately, today is Tuesday, which meant we had a spelling test. This week’s test was a little tricky for me. And then, off to lunch we went. Most of the kids, including me, had chicken nuggets. We ate, then, ran off to recess as fast as jackrabbits. Following recess, we had science. We went over the science test we took last week. Next we watched a video that taught us a little more about the nine planets. There were a lot of “ooos” and “ahs” because there were some amazing facts and pictures in the video. We also had some time to work on our space sketchy. “Clear off your desks, except for your assignment books, and meet me on the floor in front of the couch, ” said Ms. Sanborn. It was time for “teacher read.” We are reading the book Maxx Comedy. “Teacher read” was followed by study hall, which ended the day. So, as you can see, some pretty cool things went on today.
Sketchys and Stories! Today was the day for starting our third quarter stories and our Space Sketchys. As we arrived this morning in the classroom there were some interesting chats about sports and other events that had happened over the weekend. When everyone was seated and settled down, we made the lines in our assignment notebooks. Also, we chose two goals and how we are going to achieve them. We also filled out what book we were reading and the author. I'm reading a Golden Sower nominee titled Surviving the Applewhites. Then you could fill out what Ms. Sanborn had already filled out on the board in your assignment notebook. Ms. Sanborn came around with tickets and if you got your Friday Folder signed and dated, assignment book signed, and your Math Box signed, you got three tickets. I did. Wahoo! After that we started math. First, we checked our math pages all about fractions. Next we did pages 254, 255 and 257 about adding fractions and with common denominators. If you want to learn more about common denominators, fractions, and simplest forms go to www.aaamath/frac.com. We were also assigned page 257 that was all about fractions, number stories, counters and fraction sticks. We also had a link, but we don't get those until 3:15. Today in writing we started to write our 3rd quarter stories and plan out the plots and settings of our stories. My story is about a Super Penguin who saves a dog named D.O.G., so my plot is a rescue. When we all were tired of writing, we were in luck because it was gym time. In gym we played hockey. Well, mini hockey I should say because the sticks and the goals were mini-sized! The game ended in a tie with the score being three to three! After the long, exhausting game of hockey we had reading. I love reading, but some people loathe it. In reading we read our TFK (Time For Kids) with a partner. My partner was Ryan. Then we had to do a TFK sheet. I got that done in a jiffy. But the hour until lunch did not go in a jiffy, it took forever. Next we had editing and spelling. In editing we edited “Folk Tales of Asia.” In spelling we had to look over our spelling words then do a spelling sheet. After editing and spelling time it was finally lunchtime. For lunch the choices there were: A. Pepperoni Pizza B. Hot Dog and C. American Wrap. I had a Hot Dog. Then it was recess. During recess we played Knock Out. When we all came in, some of us were cold and some were ok. Then we went to the library. Next was Science. In science we listed some space concepts, then we made our Space Sketchys. My sketchy is about the constellations. The Sketchys are due Wednesday. Then we had teacher read. We are reading a book called Maxx Comedy. It is about a kid name Max and he is a comedian and he tries out for a funniest kid in America and he gets in so he is on his way to Chicago. The final part of the day was study hall. Study hall is where you can do the work you didn't get finished. If you don’t get finished with it in study hall, it becomes homework. So I worked on spelling and my TFK sheet. Then it was time to go home. So we all lined up in a hurry. It was a long day with all the new work and new projects.
Big Test Friday Yes! It's Friday today! We took our big Space test today, plus we played Newsbowl! But wait, it's Friday not Wednesday. Oh yeah, it was Dr. Seuss' birthday on Wednesday, so instead of Newsbowl, it was Read Across America during our regular Newsbowl time. One more thing, we sang "You've Got A Friend," by Carole King in music today. The first thing we did this morning was study our space quizzler for the big test. Some of the questions were; What is the second closest planet to the sun? Which colored star is the hottest? Etc. Math was next. "Trade math journals please," said the BEST teacher Ms. Sanborn. We checked page 250, a Math Box. Next, we did three pages from our new unit. They were just fraction review pages. They last pages we had to do was a Math Box. Then math ended. Now to move on to my favorite subject, writing! Today in writing we each shared our Radio WillowWeb ideas. They were all GREAT! We also shared our Teacher Appreciation writing pieces that we had done earlier in the week. If you want to learn more about teacher appreciation, go to www.intrepidmuseum.org/programsteacherapp.html. "Take out your palms and keyboard," Ms. Sanborn said softly. Once we got out what we were told to, Ms. Sanborn told us to type our Teacher Appreciation pieces on the Palm. "Line up for music!" Ms. Sanborn said. Once we got to the music room, the music teacher Ms. Noble told Reanna and Laura to pass out music. This song "You've Got A Friend," explained Ms. Noble, "Is the song that the whole school is going to sing next Friday." Finally we sang the song twice. I really do like that song! "I really want to thank the chorus members in this class only, because you always listen and your singing voices are great!" Ms. Noble said proudly. "I am going to give you fifty music bucks," she said. "YEAH!" we all cheered. Next, was reading. We shared our Reader’s Theatre scenes with the class. If you don’t know it’s when you read the whole book or a scene and everyone reads being their own character. "Take your shoes off for The Case of the Flying Saucer People test!" Ms. Sanborn said happily. Personally, I kind of like these tests because they are easy! "Get out your editing books and your spelling books." Ms. Sanborn said. We edited first, then with a partner of our choice, I was with Reanna of course we studied spelling for ten minutes. "Growl, GROWL!" that was my stomach. Thankfully, it was lunch time. I am not sure what the chioces were today, because I had cold lunch. It was so B-E-A...utiful at recess today. Once we came in we had SSR. Which stands for either Silent, Something, Reading or Something, Silent, Reading. That was quite relaxing after the recess we had. The next thing we had to do I was very nervous for. It was the BIG Space test. It was worth 100 spicy points. I got through it, and thanks to studying, I think I did very well. Newsbowl on a Friday, strange?! We played Newsbowl because of the Dr. Seuss thing Wednesday. It was fun and my group did well. There were some good questions. Teacher Read time! Maxx Comedy! Today we read that they said that Max did not make it into the Funniest Kid in America contest, but they were fooling him. Max is on his way to Chicago! Finally, it was time for study hall. Everyone worked on something Ms. Sanborn had assigned earlier. BRINNGGGGGG! Finally, it was time to go home after a long day with two tests, Newsbowl, and great weather. Even better we looked forward to a couple days with no Ms. Sanborn around. JUST KIDDING Ms. S.!
Palms, a Game, and Visitors Today on the board were three notes about our upcoming day. The first was the words Roving Reporter: Micah, the second was Lunch Helpers: Ben and Nicola. The final, and most important said Visitors: 10:30. Out of those, most everyone knows about two of them, but I'll explain all of them later anyway. The first activity we did today, after everyone had checked in, was Ms. Sanborn beamed us all a Palm game and had us try it out. The game was called Minesweeper and it was fun. In sixth grade math, we worked on pan-balance problems, with both pictures and numbers. I don't know what they did in fifth grade math, so ask them about it. In writing we did a sheet on pronoun cases, and then the VISITORS came...... The visitors were really just people who came to admire us and our Palm skills (at least, some of us). We were sitting in different groups and each group showed the visitors a different Palm application or how we used them. Finally, P.E.! First we ran 5 laps around the gym, and then got hockey sticks, soft red balls, and pins. We tried to knock down the other team's pins by shooting the balls with our sticks, without having all our pins knocked down. My team won all three times. Before we knew it, it was time for reading! While the regular reading group did a worksheet, Classics met on the couch and shared our answers to questions from our reading workbooks. "Go to your seats," Ms. Sanborn ordered. We then had another special guest from first grade who came to read to us because it's Read Across America week. She read Danny and the Dinosaur. Afterwards, we had one group recite their Reader’s Theater to us. The scene was from the book Don Quixote. Lunch and recess! Lunch and recess! Lunch and recess! Lunch and recess! That is what happened next. In science we studied Quizzler with a buddy, then played a game like Jeopardy to review for the Space test, where there's questions worth different amounts of points, and the team with the most amount of points at the end wins. My teammates and I won! During study hall and teacher read, nothing exciting happened. We just got our work done and listened. The bell rang, which concluded our day of showing off our Palms, playing a new game, and teaching our visitors all about how we use our Palms.
The Surprising Day Our day was so surprising for a few reasons; we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday, we had tons of delicious Potluck food, and the kindergarten teacher taught us about Dr. Seuss while Ms. Sanborn left to teach the fourth graders. This morning we started with our AM assignment, which was to clean our tote tray and our box. The first subject of the day was math. We had the unit test today over Unit 7, which included skills like negative numbers. I hope everybody studied for it! Writing was the next subject that we did. We had nothing that was due today, but we have an assignment that's due tomorrow. It's our job sheet that we are practicing for the Willowweb radio cast. At 10:25 our teacher walked us to gymsic class. In gymsic class we used Chinese jump ropes. It was really tricky. After gymsic we took a spelling pretest. Ms. Sanborn likes to stump some people because we have some pretty good spellers in our class. Science was the next subject on the schedule for today. In science we worked on the Space Quizzler that Ms. Sanborn beamed to us. We needed to get an A on the Quizzler or we would have to keep trying. After all, practice makes perfect! At the end of the day, we scampered into the extra fifth grade room to watch a Dr. Seuss movie. The movie was called "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish." It was an exciting movie. Well, I thought it was exciting, funny, and silly. Can you guess why we watched the movie? It was Dr. Seuss' birthday today! Since it was Wednesday, it meant a short day for us. It didn't seem like it, though, because we were really busy. When the bell rang, everyone rushed out of the building.
Switching and Tye-Dye Tuesday The first day of a new month is always exciting because we wear our tye dye t-shirts we made and switch desk arrangements and who we sit by. We always wonder who we will sit next to this month and this morning our questions were answered! Our morning assignment was a science crossword puzzle which most of us finished quickly. In math we started the day with some problems on our dry erase boards. Then we checked a friend's Unit 7 study guide for the test Wednesday. Next, we completed Math Box, page 250, which was mostly about fractions. When we finished, we could study for the test with a partner. Later, during writing we shared more persuasive writings about the one thing we would change in the classroom. Next we had a short lesson on topic sentences in paragraphs then we wrote about why we appreciated teachers. Lastly, we met with our writing groups to discuss our radio broadcast sheets. "Line up for music,” Ms. Sanborn directed. In music class, we watched a Carole King concert. My favorite song was "Do The Locomotion"! Finally, the best part of Tuesday, March first was here! We got to switch desks, but Ms. Sanborn got to pick where we sat. During reading the entire class, except for classics, met on the floor and talked about the story The Case of the Flying Saucer People. After the discussion, we met in our small groups and went over our parts that we are going to read aloud to the class on Thursday. It was so close to lunchtime, but we still had two things to do! The first item was editing #3 in our editing books. The second item was a handwriting contest in which the winner gets big bucks if selected in the National contest! Finally it was time for lunch! Most of us had "C" lunch, which was a hot dog. We went outside for lunch recess and it was SO chilly! We were so glad when it was time to go back inside. In science, our class reviewed the four study sheets because we have a test on Thursday. We also studied with a partner. Woohoo!! There were no subjects left for the day! It was time for teacher read. Yesterday Ms. Sanborn started a new book titled Maxx Comedy. In the book, Max is very prudent about a movie he is making to get into a comedy contest. When we finished about two chapters, it was time for study hall. The end of the day arrived. The learning process on this Tuesday was like any other Tuesday with the exception of switching seats!
Plain Old Day Today was a normal day. If you just wait for a second, I can tell you why. Our first subject of the day is my favorite, math. The first activity in math for today was to check math journals, then math links. Links are a worksheet, which have problems to practice what we did in math that day at home. We get them almost every day. Next, Ms. Sanborn handed us our Unit 7 study guides to work on. "Clear off your desks and go sit in front of the couch." said Ms. Sanborn. This meant Writing. We had to share our persuasive writing that we did last week. In the end I didn't have to share because we didn't have enough time to get through all of them. Our next task was to start on our Radio Willow Web scripts. If you would like to see or listen to what that is then go to http://www.mpsomaha.org/willow/radio/index.html. "Yes, yippee, hooray, finally!" said several people in the class. That is because gym was next. In gym, we first had to run five laps, and then we played hockey. My team lost 4 to 2. After gym we all smelled like wet dogs because we were sweating so much. Reading was our next subject. We did vocabulary and predicted for a book called The Case of the Flying Saucer People. Then we read the story. Right after that, we had editing. The first homework that we were assigned for that subject was to edit sentence #1. Then we had to do the last page in our handwriting packet. Luckily, next was lunch. I brought my own lunch. Once everybody scarfed down their food, we went outside. It was so cold. I was so happy when we got to come back in five minutes early. When we got inside and our Monday library time, it was time for science. We checked papers first then studied with a partner for the big space test on Friday. I was with Kaleb. Finally it was time for teacher read. We were starting a new book because we finished our last one. We voted and decided to read Maxx Comedy. It has been funny so far. Only one activity was left to do before school was out and that's study hall. I didn't get all my work done, but I was close. 30 more seconds until school was out, and I was waiting in line to go home when suddenly the bell rang. Ms. Sanborn almost got trampled over by her students. If you want to hear more about everyday fifth grade school life, then stay tuned for tomorrow's blog.
